  • Modeling and simulation of interventions’ effect on the spread of toxicity in social media

Open Access•Emmanuel Addai, Neil Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Online Social Networks and Media•2025

  • A comparative evaluation of social network analysis tools

Open Access•Ridwan Amure, Neil Agarwal•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

Graphs are increasingly used in research, industry, and government. This has led to a wide range of analytical and graph-processing tools. There are various tools and platforms for graph processing. Over time, diverse systems have emerged, employing various statistics and criteria to evaluate their effectiveness and usability in processing graph data. As a result, comparing the various systems’ performances becomes challenging. This study benchma…

  • Modeling cross-platform narrative templates

Open Access•Ridwan Amure, Neil Agarwal•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

Over the past decade, online social media has grown in size, features, and complexity, providing users with increased satisfaction and prompting many to maintain accounts across multiple platforms. Information actors have also taken advantage of this environment, using cross-platform dynamics to amplify content’s reach and target specific audiences strategically. As these actors will likely continue exploiting social media, we argue that it is cr…

  • Safeguarding youtube discussions

Open Access•Shadi Shajari, Neil Agarwal•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

In today’s digital landscape, YouTube’s comment sections play an essential role in shaping public opinion and discussions. However, coordinated groups often exploit these platforms to spread misinformation and distort conversations. This study introduces a method to detect and quantify such anomalous behavior on YouTube channels by analyzing two key components: commenter behaviors and engagement patterns. Focusing on channels concerning news outl…

  • Co-commenters as clues

Open Access•Ridwan Amure, Neil Agarwal•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

We propose a semi-supervised approach that finds anomalous YouTube channels by combining co-commenter networks and engagement features. Our method, named SEPS (Semi-Supervised Embedding-based Propagation Scoring), uses a small set of labeled anomalies to guide the learning process. It trains a graph neural network to embed nodes, spreads those partial labels through a simple classification head, and flags channels that appear suspicious. The mode…

  • Constructing a multi-theoretical framework for mob modeling

Open Access•R Murray, Bridget Orr et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

As social media has made us more connected, it has also increased our ability to mobilize groups of people and coordinate events, such as mobs. Understanding the motivation of individuals to join such events and the ability to predict the outcome of these events (success or failure) is complex and requires a robust understanding of social science theories. In this research, we aim to analyze the applicability of five social science theories to ex…

  • Modeling polarized information diffusion with SEI(A)I(D)Z

Open Access•Mayor Inna Gurung, Neil Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

The spread of narratives online has been extensively studied. However, prior research typically relies on metadata and often overlooks the dynamics of post stances. In this paper, we introduce a novel stance-based epidemiological model, which explicitly incorporates the stance of posts—a critical element often ignored by models that focus solely on isolated narratives. Our model, $$SEI_A I_D Z$$ S E I A I D Z ( $$S$$ S = susceptible, $$E$$ E = ex…

  • Symbolic signals on Instagram

Open Access•Mayor Inna Gurung, Neil Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025

Throughout history, visual symbols have served as powerful tools for communication, uniting communities, shaping narratives, and driving social movements. From traditional media such as pamphlets and murals to contemporary public art, these symbols carry profound social, cultural, and political (SCP) significance, fostering identity, unity, and shared values through the framework of symbolic interaction theory. In the digital era, platforms like …

  • Developing a network-centric approach for anomalous behavior detection on youtube

Open Access•Shadi Shajari, Neil Agarwal•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2025•References: 25

As the second most visited website globally, YouTube serves as a central platform for video sharing, entertainment, and information dissemination. However, its expansive and highly active user base also facilitates problematic behavior, particularly among commenters. This study presents a methodology driven by social network analysis to detect and examine anomalous commenter behaviors, with a specific focus on commenter mobs that collaborate to a…

  • Kg-Cfsa

Open Access•Abiola Akinnubi, Mustafa Alassad et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2024

Analyzing opinions, extracting and modeling information, and performing network analysis in online information studies are challenging tasks with multi-source social network data. This complexity arises from the difficulty in harnessing data across various platforms and the absence of a unified data modeling approach. Although social network analysis has used a multiplex approach to study complex networks, no previous work has integrated data fro…

  • The bias beneath

Open Access•Mert Can Cakmak, Neil Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2024•References: 55

In today's digital world, understanding how YouTube's recommendation systems guide what we watch is crucial. This study dives into these systems, revealing how they influence the content we see over time. We found that YouTube's algorithms tend to push content in certain directions, affecting the variety and type of videos recommended to viewers. To uncover these patterns, we used a mixed methods approach to analyze videos recommended by YouTube.…

  • Analyzing the impact of symbols in Taiwan's election-related anti-disinformation campaign on TikTok

Open Access•Sayantan Bhattacharya, Neil Agarwal et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2024•References: 13

Social, cultural, and political (SCP) symbols in campaigns play vital roles in connecting emotionally with people, representing identity, simplifying complex issues, and reinforcing political ideologies. This study investigates the impact of SCP symbol content on engagement, emotional responses, and trust in electoral process in TikTok-based anti-disinformation campaigns during Taiwanese 2024 general elections. Utilizing advanced natural language…

  • Evaluating collective action theory-based model to simulate mobs

    Open Access•Samer Al-Khateeb, Jack Burright et al.•ARTICLE•Social Network Analysis and Mining•2024•References: 22

A mob is an event that is organized via social media, email, SMS, or other forms of digital communication technologies in which a group of people (who might have an agenda) get together online or offline to collectively conduct an act and then disperse (quickly or over a long period). In recent years, these events are increasingly happening worldwide due to the anonymity of the internet, affordability of social media, boredom, etc. Studying such …

  • Social Bots and Their Coordination During Online Campaigns

Open Access•Tuja Khaund, Baris Kirdemir et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Computational…•2022

Online social networks (OSNs) are a major component of societal digitalization. OSNs alter how people communicate, make decisions, and form or change their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Thus, they can now impact social groups, financial systems, and political communication at scale. As one type of OSN, social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, serve as outlets for users to convey information to an audience as broad or t…

  • Using computer technology to address the problem of cyberbullying

Open Access•Robin Cohen, Disney Yan Lam et al.•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2014

The issue of cyberbullying is a social concern that has arisen due to the prevalent use of computer technology today. In this paper, we present a multi-faceted solution to mitigate the effects of cyberbullying, one that uses computer technology in order to combat the problem. We propose to provide assistance for various groups affected by cyberbullying (the bullied and the bully, both). Our solution was developed through a series of group project…
