I know you are but who Am I? Presentation and labelling in young queer communities
Recent research shows a sharp increase in the number of queer-identified young people in the United States, along with an expansion of terms people use to describe their queer identities. Using semi-structured interview data collected from 30 queer-identified non-male 18-23-year-olds, we examine how young people today use terminology, identity, and appearance to communicate their sexual and/or gender identity. We find that the two most salient fa…
Sticking to it or Opting for Alternatives: Managing Contested Work Identities in Nonstandard Work
My Body of Work: Promotional Labor and the Bundling of Complementary Work
What if certain types of work allow workers to earn higher incomes when bundled together? Using qualitative interview data on the careers of sex workers in California, the author argues that workers can attempt to increase overall earnings by taking part in promotional labor: a specific type of labor in which workers strategically bundle complementary forms of work with differing status and income levels to increase overall income. Because of a s…
Money, Morals, and Condom Use: The Politics of Health in Gay and Straight Adult Film Production
This paper compares condom use between the gay and straight California adult film industries and examines the culturally embedded decision making processes that affect the use of condoms in adult films. Drawing on in-depth interviews with people in the adult film industry, I argue that those within the gay and straight adult film industries utilize condoms and HIV testing as strategic actions motivated by two separate institutional logics. Within…
Alcohol in Heavenston: Shifting Moral Orders and Economic Interests in a Suburban Community
In 1972, after nearly 120 years of alcohol prohibition, alcohol was legalized in Evanston, Illinois. Using this example of legalization as a case study, we examine how the relationship among values, social class, and economics drives communal moral orders, focusing on changes that occur when the moral order no longer symbolically represents the community in light of their economic interests and self-image. Using a comparative historical framework…
Switching off of Magnetic Fields
Instantaneous switching off of magnetic fields usually involves some analytical problems concerning the instant t= 0. It is shown that this is due to the fact that disrupted electromagnetic circuits are systems with "a half degree of freedom." The correct answers are obtained only if the displacement current is taken into account, although its absolute value is negligible in conductors
A Simplified Approach to Instruction in Saturable Reactors and Magnetic Amplifiers
This paper intends to cast new light on some problems that hamper beginners when studying saturable reactor performance. It is not easy to explain to students why the mean value of the current must be zero for a nonlinear circuit having a characteristic resembling that of a rectifier. In addition, it is hard to grasp at initial stages how direct current can be "transformed" from the control to the power circuit. These problems and many others are…
