  • Early Net Fishing at the Epipaleolithic Site of Jordan River Dureijat, Upper Jordan River, Israel

Open Access•Anna-Marie Marko, E Cristiani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maritime Archaeology•2026

For more than 10,000 years (~ 20,000–10,000 BP), human groups repeatedly returned to the southern edge of Paleo-lake Hula in the Upper Jordan Valley to exploit aquatic resources at the Epipaleolithic site of Jordan River Dureijat (JRD). Previous research has emphasized line fishing based on bone fishhooks and line weights. Here, we document additional fishing methods revealed by the systematic use of limestone cobbles as net sinkers. The limeston…

  • The influence of cognitive evolution on handaxe making skill in the Acheulean

Open Access•Antoine Muller, Ceri Shipton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2026•References: 101

Reconstructing the complex human behaviours that manifest in the Palaeolithic archaeological record remains an elusive but important challenge for capturing traces of how the human mind evolved. The roughly 1.5 million years of handaxe-making throughout the Acheulean provides a consistently preserved manifestation of hominin technological skills. Here, we analyse 1108 3D scans of handaxes from 12 sites in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa a…

  • Identifying a Knapping Signature for Lower Paleolithic Spheroid Reduction

    Open Access•Deborah Barsky, Robert Sala-Ramos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 37

Spheroids are Lower Paleolithic stone tools documented in African and Eurasian archeological sites ascribed to the later Oldowan and Acheulian cultural complexes. While reported since the 1960s, there is disagreement about how they were made, or whether their morphology resulted from non-intentional processes related to flake production or percussive activities. Recently, attention has turned towards resolving the issue of intentionality in spher…

  • The Skills of Handaxe Making

Open Access•Antoine Muller, Gonen Sharon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Method…•2025•Cited by: 8•References: 22

Observations about handaxe techno-morphology, like their symmetry, refinement, and fine edges have long been used to reconstruct the evolution of hominin cognition, skills, and technological decision making. However, these interpretations about the cognitive and technical abilities of Acheulean hominins often rely on the most ‘beautiful’ or supposedly ‘archetypical’ looking handaxes. But how often do these finely made handaxes actually occur in a…

  • Implications of submonthly oxygen and carbon isotope variations in late Pleistocene Melanopsis shells for regional and local hydroclimate in the upper Jordan River valley

Open Access•Addison Rice, Elizabeth Bunin et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

Many water-stressed regions of the globe have a highly seasonal precipitation regime. However, seasonality in the past and under changing climates is little studied. Submonthly records of sclerochronological δ 18 O and δ 13 C values of Melanopsis shells from the Jordan River Dureijat archaeological site (JRD) in the upper Jordan River valley presented here document the hydrology of paleo-Lake Hula. These records were assessed for changes in seaso…

The Hula Valley has two key Acheulian sites: Gesher Benot Ya'aqov (GBY), a large flake Acheulian site with hundreds of basalt bifaces and a significant number of flint handaxes, and Ma'ayan Barukh (MB), where more than 3500 flint handaxes were collected. Over the last one million years, the valley was filled by alluvium and basalt flows, devoid of flint sources suitable for handaxe production. We conducted archaeological and geological surveys co…

  • Pleistocene amphibians and squamates from the Upper Jordan Rift Valley, Gesher Benot Ya’aqov and Nahal Mahanayeem Outlet (MIS 20–18 and MIS 4/3)

Open Access•Rebecca Biton, Salvador Bailon et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2019

The Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya’aqov (GBY) and the Mousterian site of Nahal Mahanayeem Outlet (NMO) are open-air sites situated on the bank of the Upper Jordan River at its southern estuary in the Hula Valley, Israel. Both sites were deposited on the shore of a paleo-Lake Hula, a shallow body of water that persisted throughout a considerable part of the Pleistocene as a fresh-water lake. Most of the amphibian and squamate taxa recovered are…

The Acheulian culture, which persisted for over one and a half million years, is attested in diverse environments and over wide geographical expanses. The hallmark of Acheulian culture is its large cutting tools, primarily handaxes and cleavers. Indeed, the culture itself was named after the site of St. Acheul on the terraces of the Somme River, France, where handaxes were first identified as prehistoric stone tools, an identification supported b…

The ability to detach large (larger than 10 cm) flakes from giant cores and use them as blanks for the production of handaxes and cleavers is a technological hallmark distinguishing the Acheulian culture from its African predecessor, the Developed Oldowan, approximately 1.5 million years ago. Acheulian knappers applied a variety of fundamentally different, innovative, and sophisticated methods to large-flake production that were perfectly suited …

The Acheulian site of Gesher Benot Ya‘aqov (Israel) has revealed a unique association of edible nuts with pitted hammers and anvils. Located in the Dead Sea rift, on the boundary between the Arabian and African plates, the site dates to the Early-Middle Pleistocene, oxygen isotope stage 19. In a series of strata, seven species of nuts, most of which can be cracked open only by a hard hammer, were uncovered. Five of the species are extant terrestr…
