  • Lewis, Thau, and Hall on Chance and the Best-System Account of Law

    Open Access•John F Halpin•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article considers the recent work of David Lewis, Ned Hall, and Michael Thau on chance and the best system account of law. My rejoinder suggests that, though their proposals may succeed at the stated goal of reworking the problematic relationship between chance, credence, and law, the resulting account of law suffers from an even more significant difficulty. To oversimplify a bit, I argue that their account is unable to handle the nomic nece…

  • What is the Logical Form of Probability Assignment in Quantum Mechanics

    Open Access•John F Halpin•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The nature of quantum mechanical probability has often seemed mysterious. To shed some light on this topic, the present paper analyzes the logical form of probability assignment in quantum mechanics. To begin the paper, I set out and criticize several attempts to analyze the form. I go on to propose a new form which utilizes a novel, probabilistic conditional and argue that this proposal is, overall, the best rendering of the quantum mechanical p…

  • The Metaphysics of Quantum Theory

John F Halpin, John Halpin et al.•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Review•1991

The interplay between non-relativistic quantum theory and metaphysics has generated radically opposed interpretations for quantum theory: Niels Bohr's 'orthodox' interpretation, and Einstein's 'realist' one. Out of this debate emerged the classical first-generation paradoxes of quantum theory: Schrodinger's Cat and the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradoxes. And more recently a range of new paradoxes has emerged from the work of J.S. Bell which questi…
