Shakespeare's dramatization of Hamlet's verbal assault upon his guilty mother, and his efforts to bring her to repentance, are a fine example of how the ‘priesthood of all believers’ was expected to operate at the end of the first Protestant century. Elizabethan audiences would have agreed with Hamlet's own assessment of his behavior, that he was being “cruel only to be kind.” This much-misunderstood scene is thus, in addition to its poetic and d…

  • The Two Books of God

    Open Access•Roland Mushat Frye•ARTICLE•Theology Today•1982

“We have available to us not just one book of God, but two: the book of God's word in Scripture, which concerns the ultimate nature and destiny of humanity, and the book of God's works in nature, which deals with the conditions of the created order.... The entire flowering of modern culture, and derivatively of modern technology, grew out of this essentially religious conception of the two books of God.”

“By denying the realm of nature as fundamentalism did, and by denying the realm of the supernatural as the demythologizers and others do, we find that the seamless coat of Christ is ripped apart. Only by holding steadily and honestly to the Gospel of the Incarnation, with its inseparable juncture of nature and grace, reason and revelation, life here and hereafter, can the church truly be the church as God's mission in a divided world.”
