  • Reawakening the Curious Muses

Open Access•Kathleen Arnold, Ken Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Museum Worlds•2021

This conversation between the founding and current directors of the multi-award-winning Medical Museion at the University of Copenhagen was held online, COVID-19-style, in the spring of 2021. We have different backgrounds and instincts. One of us is an academic historian of science, who almost accidentally ended up also running a museum. The other has spent decades working in museums, and then found himself hired as a university professor. Here w…

In the last five to ten years, several science, technology, engineering and medicine (STEM) museums have been experimenting with new forms of public engagement, aiming to be places for curiosity-driven investigation of the cultures of science via multiple perspectives, bringing artists, scientists, researchers, clinicians, members of the public and others together. • Medical Instruments in Museums

Open Access•Kathleen Arnold, Ken Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Isis•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 3

This essay proposes that our understanding of medical instruments might benefit from adding a more forthright concern with their immediate presence to the current historical focus on simply decoding their meanings and context. This approach is applied to the intriguingly tricky question of what actually is meant by a "medical instrument." It is suggested that a pragmatic part of the answer might lie simply in reconsidering the holdings of medical…

  • Paul Ehrlich's Receptor Immunology

Thomas Söderqvist•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the history of medicine•2003

Paul Ehrlich has had his share of biographers, at least in Germany. First out was a small volume in the series "Meister der Heilkunde" by one of his co-workers, Adolf Lazarus (Paul Ehrlich, 1922), who wanted to understand which spiritual and moral forces had contributed to his master's "genial intuition." Paul Ehrlich als Mensch und Arbeiter, the standard work for more than half a century, was published two years later by his former secretary, Ma…

  • Participation in Scientific Meetings

    Open Access•Thomas Söderqvist, Arthur M Silverstein•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1994•Cited by: 5

To handle the enormous amount of sources in modern and contemporary science, the historian can use different quantitative methods, particularly varieties of citation analysis. So far, all these methods have been based on publication data. Taking as its point of departure the fact that meetings constitute a pervasive, yet neglected, aspect of science, this paper introduces analysis of participation in scientific meetings. The strength of this new …
