Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (Simd) indicators as predictors of mortality among patients hospitalised with Covid-19 disease in the Lothian Region, Scotland during the first wave: A cohort st…
SIMD as an aggregate measure of deprivation was not predictive of mortality in our cohort when other exposure measures were accounted for. However, we identified a two-fold increased risk of mortality in patients residing in areas with greater income-deprivation and/or number of hospitalisations due to alcohol. In areas where aggregate measures fail to capture pockets of deprivation, exploring the impact of specific SIMD indicators may be helpful…

Walter LaFeber: The Making of a Wisconsin School Revisionist
We first met Walt LaFeber in the fall of 1956 in Fred Harvey Harrington's seminar at the University of Wisconsin. At that time, the prevailing critique of American foreign policy in the academy was the Realist commentary most effectively presented in George Frost Kennan's American Diplomacy, 1900–1950.1 With the “fall” of China in 1949 to the Communists, the State Department and the Truman administration had been put on the defensive by Republica…

The Promises and Perils of American Hegemony
Architecture after Richardson: Regionalism before Modernism--Longfellow, Alden and Harlow in Boston and Pittsburgh
Most histories of American architecture after H. H. Richardson have emphasized the work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in the Middle West. By examining instead the legacy of three highly successful architects who were in practice simultaneously in New England and Western Pennsylvania from 1886 into the 1920s, Margaret Henderson Floyd underscores the architectural significance of another part of the nation. Floyd critically' assesses the…
A Retrospective on the World-System and its Prospects for the Next Quarter-Century

Behind the Throne: Servants of Power to Imperial Presidents, 1898-1968
During the American rise to world in the last hundred years, a new presidency has also arisen, a presidency that uses military, economic, political, and personal that the constitutional founders of the 1780s would have thought highly improbable and dangerous. Behind the Throne argues that United States presidents have received foreign policy advice from a new breed of government whose first loyalties were to the chief executive, not the bureaucra…

Something Old, Something New: "John Lewis Gaddis's "New Conceptual Approaches
John Lewis Gaddis's “New Conceptual Approaches to the Study of American Foreign Relations: Interdisciplinary Perspectives” is essentially a two-part essay. The first half attacks the field's existing generalizations and theories for their alleged oversimplification and inability to explain complex historical data. Much of this covers well-trod ground, including prior treks by Gaddis himself, and seems unlikely to change many minds or open up new …

Drift or Mastery? A Corporatist Synthesis for American Diplomatic History
The state of modern American diplomatic history somehow mirrors its subject matter: Camelot to crisis to conundrum-and then the ennui of the new brown decade. What once imparted vitality and verve, excitement and expectancy to the field was the dynamic impact of left-revisionism. Its great virtue was to rescue historians from the sterile political science debate over realism versus idealism. The result was a new debate that was more honest and fe…

China Market: America's Quest for Informal Empire, 1893-1901
Of all the world's mercantile lures, none was more persistent or more mesmeric for Americans than the fabled Far Eastern markets. In the 1890s, United States commercial expansion into the Pacific catapulted the nation to the status of a great power. In describing and analyzing American ambitions in China which led to the Open Door negotiations, Mr. McCormick argues that American leaders rationally and pragmatically sought the China market in orde…
