Timothy J Steigenga, Timothy Steigenga et al.•BOOK•Conversion of a Continent:…•2019

A massive religious transformation has unfolded over the past forty years in Latin America and the Caribbean. In a region where the Catholic Church could once claim a near monopoly of adherents, religious pluralism has fundamentally altered the social and religious landscape. Conversion of a Continent brings together twelve original essays that document and explore competing explanations for how and why conversion has occurred. Contributors draw …

    T Steigenga, Timothy J Steigenga et al.•ARTICLE•Polity•1995•Cited by: 9

Challenging the widely held assumption that Latin American Protestants are always conservative or apolitical, Christian Lalive d'Epinay's studies of Chilean Protestants showed that they can adopt either radical or conservative positions. Surveys taken in Santiago, Chile in 1972 and 1991 confirm Lalive's conclusion and suggest that the extent to which Protestants move in radical or conservative directions depends heavily on the political context. …

  • Protestantism in El Salvador: Conventional Wisdom versus Survey Evidence

Open Access•Edwin Eloy Aguilar, José Miguel Sandoval et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•1993

Protestantism has grown strikingly throughout Latin America in the last two decades. Estimating such growth is hazardous in the absence of firm national survey data, but the phenomenon is clearly embracing sizable segments of national populations. In Guatemala, estimates of Protestants in the national population ranged from 20 to 25 percent by the early 1980s, with more recent estimates approaching 30 percent
