  • Intertextuality and Tradition

    Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2021

These two contributions to the ongoing story of intertextual theory and criticism are diametrically opposed in their approaches and in that way bear witness to the persistence of the concept of intertextuality. Jessica Mason, in Intertextuality in Practice, brings together contemporary versions of stylistic analysis with narratology and with cognitive poetics to look specifically at the way in which readers employ intertextual strategies in compi…

    Open Access•Tingting Ma, Irving Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Education•2016•References: 15

From the perspectives of Graduate Research Assistants (GRAs), this study examines the design and implementation of a simulated teaching environment in Second Life ( SL) for prospective teachers to teach algebra for diverse learners. Drawing upon the Learning-for-Use framework, the analyses provide evidence on the development of student avatars in construction and role-playing activities. The study reveals challenges, procedures, and suggestions f…

  • Early interveners: “Leave your comfort zone!”

    Open Access•Gordon Allen, Graham Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Children s Services•2012•References: 3

Purpose The prominence of late intervention in service delivery culture contrasts with the depth of scientific evidence that demonstrates the advantage of intervening early to prevent the development of social dysfunction and problems. The paper seeks to address this issue. Design/methodology/approach This paper draws on the author's experience as a leading UK politician advocating the greater use of evidence‐based early intervention approaches, …

  • Intertextuality

    Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•BOOK•Intertextuality•2011

Theories of intertextuality suggest that meaning in a text can only ever be understood in relation to other texts; no work stands alone but is interlinked with the tradition that came before it and the context in which it is produced. This idea of intertextuality is crucial to understanding literary studies today. Graham Allen deftly introduces the topic and relates its significance to key theories and movements in the study of literature. The se…

  • Holes

    Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2009

365 Holes Graham Allen (bio) What would a poem look like if it took ‘Structure, Sign and Play’ as a manifesto for poetry? It would certainly be written for voices. Female and male voices. Female and male voices in the voice. It would tell no story, or rather too many. It would have no quotable core, no touchstones; or, perhaps it would be merely what is quotable. A series of touchstones, soon to be tombstones. It would somehow escape the literary…

  • After Livy/Mosul Journal

Gordon Allen, E Mumford et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2009

These are the first few poems from a series which is in process. They form the central part of a cycle of poems, Trasimene, based on the lake in Umbria in which Hannibal achieved his second significant victory on Italian soil in the Second Punic War. I visit Lago Trasimene every year and over time I’ve worked on a collection which attempts to link modern Italian lake-life with the historical events which happened there over two thousand years ago…

  • Unfashioned creatures, but half made up: Beginning With Mary Shelley's Spectre

    Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2007

This paper uses Derrida’s work Politics of Friendship to interrogate the concept of the “friend” in the educational and fictional writings of Mary Shelley, William Godwin and Mary Wiollstonecraft. It concludes with a reading of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, which argues that a certain wager on the possibility friendship rhetorically structures Wollstonecraft’s text. The argument about friendship and education mounted in this paper leads o…

Each exchange begins with the same question, namely an invitation to reflect on US domination vis-à-vis the university an…

  • Godwin, Fénelon, and the disappearing teacher

Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•ARTICLE•History of European Ideas•2006

The connection between Godwin and Fénelon has traditionally been restricted to the famous and controversial moment in the first edition of Political Justice (1793) in which Godwin presents an example of the interdependence of rationality and ethical action. This paper argues, however, that Fénelon, and particularly his political and educational treatise Telemachus (1699), plays a significant role in a number of Godwin's subsequent fictional works…

  • Intertextuality

    Gordon Allen, Graham Allen•BOOK•Intertextuality•2000

No text has its meaning alone; all texts have their meaning in relation to other texts. Since Julia Kristeva coined the term in the 1960s, intertextuality has been a dominant idea within literary and cultural studies leaving none of the traditional ideas about reading or writing undisturbed. Graham Allen's Intertextuality outlines clearly the history and the use of the term in contemporary theory, demonstrating how it has been employed in: struct…

    Open Access•Yvette R Harris, Denise Terrel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 15

The goal of this study is to examine the influence of maternal education level, context, and maternal beliefs on the teaching behaviors of African American mothers. In addition, the relationship between maternal teaching and children's mastery of the information is explored. Fifty-one African American mothers were observed teaching their 4-year-old preschool children three memory tasks and were administered a three-part questionnaire to determine…

  • Toward a dynamics for power and control in society

    Gordon Allen, G D Allen•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper concerns the dynamical interactions between the macro structures of a society. From three axioms governing social interaction, a combined cooperative‐competitive model consisting of a nonlinear differential system of equations is introduced. Various social and political phenomena are interpreted through the parameters (also called strategies) of the model, including coalitions, alliances, and revolutions. For example, four distinct typ…

  • Old colony Mennonites in Mexico: Migration and inbreeding

Gordon Allen, Calvin Redekop et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1987•References: 8

Among Canadian Mennonites whose ancestors left Flanders in the sixteenth century, one group separated as the Old Colony and part migrated in the 1920's from Canada to Mexico, where they constitute a large inbred isolate. In 1967, survey data including migration histories were collected on one‐third of the households in one subdivision, the “M Colony.” Church records were copied that gave vital statistics and surnames of almost all families in the…

  • Inbreeding: Random and Nonrandom Inbreeding

    Gordon Allen•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1982•References: 14

The investigation of random and nonrandom inbreeding is discussed, including problems of definitions, estimation of the coefficient of inbreeding, limiting and meaningful values of F and R, the amount of heterozygosity in an isolate, and subdivided populations. Ideally, total inbreeding is calculated in reference to a perfectly panmictic ancestral population. Such a population has never existed; so, with investigation of remote ancestors, estimat…

Irving D Goldberg, Gordon Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1981

Utilization of medical services in Group Health Association of Washington, D.C., was analyzed for patients referred in 1970 for short-term psychiatric therapy under benefits but who had no therapy or referral for at least the 12 preceding months. A matched comparison group and family members were also studied. Medical visits were analyzed in three time periods: the 12 months preceding referral, the next 4 months when therapy was likely to be rece…

    Gordon Allen, Joseph Schachter•ARTICLE•Social Biology•1971•Cited by: 2

A relationship between fecundability and dizygotic twinning is discussed. 2 kinds of data suggest an association between high fecundability and twinning. First twinning is elevated among conceptions occurring in the first 3 months. In 1 study it was shown that for conception that occurred in the first 3 months of marriage twins exceeded expectation by 19%. Secondly the twinning rate is higher in premarital and illegitimate conceptions. It is note…
