Wives' Off-Farm Employment, Farm Family Economic Status, and Family Relationships
Deborah D. Godwin, Peggy S. Draughn, Linda F. Little, Julia Marlowe, Wives' Off-Farm Employment, Farm Family Economic Status, and Family Relationships, Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 53, No. 2 (May, 1991), pp. 389-402
Negotiation Effectiveness and Acceptable Outcomes
Rather than focusing merely on who wins in marital negotiations, as much previous research has done, this study focuses on subjective aspects of negotiation outcomes, as well as on couples' actual negotiation behavior. Four dimensions-husband's and wife's gain, the fairness of the outcome, their consensus regarding the outcome, and their affect toward each other after negotiation-are considered and tested as dimensions of subjective outcomes. Neg…
Farm Wives' Labor Force Participation and Earnings
The decisions of farm wives to work off the farm and the earnings they make in that off-farm employment should be considered simultaneously. Previous studies of wives' off-farm earnings have included only employed wives in their analyses of the factors affecting earnings, which results in biased estimates. This study tests, via Tobit analysis, a model which includes all farm wives and examines the effects of wives' human capital, farm and family …
Couple Consensus during Marital Joint Decision-Making
This study tests a conceptual model of the context, processes, and outcomes of joint marital decision-making. Alternative conceptualizations of partners' coerciveness, control, and consensus as individual versus couple constructs were assessed. Data collected via both observational and self-report methods from 188 married couples were analyzed by using the LISREL VI program. A model specifying spouses' process variables as individual-level measur…
Couple Decision Making
This study addresses the question of potential differences in the processes and outcomes of joint decision making in terms of the particular issue being negotiated by spouses, and the partner's behavior or assessment being examined. The proposition is tested and verified that decision-making processes vary by both spouse and the issue being discussed. Husbands' and wives' assessments of the outcomes of decision making do not differ within couples…
Causal Modeling in Family Research
Structural equations modeling or causal modeling is a strategy through which researchers enhance their ability to draw causal inferences for their empirical research. This type of modeling in family studies is useful when a researcher has the goal of determining whether certain cause and effect relationships among variables of interest exist in the real world of families. Godwin reviews the application of causal modeling in family research and th…
A Model of Marital Functioning Based on an Attraction Paradigm and Social-Penetration Dimensions
James M. Honeycutt, Deborah D. Godwin, A Model of Marital Functioning Based on an Attraction Paradigm and Social-Penetration Dimensions, Journal of Marriage and Family, Vol. 48, No. 3 (Aug., 1986), pp. 651-667
Housing Satisfaction and Type of Residence
A major objective of housing research continues to be the assessment of housing satisfaction. In the present study, housing satisfaction as a multidimensional construct is examined using data from a sample of rural residents of conventional homes (N=105), mobile homes (N=90), and apartments (N=110). Through factor analysis of a set of 61 housing satisfaction items, six satisfaction factors are identified. Comparison of factor scores by housing ty…
Simultaneous Equations Methods in Family Research
Family theory has developed so that family researchers are asking research questions concerning complex interrelationships in family behavior that may benefit from using simultaneous equations techniques. Methods such as three-stage least squares (3SLS) and Zellner's seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) offer conceptual and empirical advantages over single equation methods generally used for such research problems. These techniques are explained…
An Extension Note on
This paper describes the development of an information package and dispersal strategy in the housing field--the Housing Options Inventory. The package is a microcomputer-accessed data base of housing resource persons in North Carolina developed by researchers for dissemination by extension personnel
