The Sun King's Garden
The experience of reading this book can be likened to inspecting the gardens of Versailles. The gardens are arranged around major and minor axes, from which project smaller pathways, some leading to wooded grottoes or intimate hideaways which seem remote from the main allées. Likewise, Ian Thompson concentrates on certain major themes which are transected by subsidiary subjects and digressions, some of which are only tenuously linked to the centr…
Sunspots and the Sun King
The author introduces this erudite study through an analogy. Astronomers trained in the Classical tradition took it as axiomatic that the surface of the sun is smooth and in a constant state, but in 1615 Galileo observed ‘spots’ which appeared to traverse the disc of the sun, thereby ‘blemishing’ its perfection and presenting orthodox theory with an anomaly. Post-Galilean astronomers had to decide whether the spots were real or illusory; if they …
Crown, Church and Episcopate under Louis XIV
WITH this book, which covers the years 1661 to 1715, Joseph Bergin completes the project which he began with The Making of the French Episcopate, 1589–1661 (1996) (rev. ante, cxiii (1998), 728–9). To the main text he adds two appendices, one of which, as before, is a biographical dictionary of every bishop and archbishop. The historical context surrounding the study contrasts with the earlier period in two essential respects: first, from 1661 the…

Pierre-Jean-Baptiste Chomel (1671–1740)
Consider this statement: the practice of science influences and is influenced by the civilization within which it occurs. Or again: scientists do not pursue their activities in a political or social void; like other people, they aspire to make their way in the world by responding to the values and social mechanisms of their day. Set in such simple terms, each statement probably would receive the assent of most scholars interested in the history o…

Tax Evasion, the Faux Nobles, and State Fiscalism
The structure of French society in the seventeenth century presents features of enormous complexity in that the dividing lines between one stratum of society and another can be very difficult to identify. The division between nobility and commoners, for example, is rendered hazy by the existence of faux nobles, commoners who by one means or another had usurped noble titles and enjoyed illegally the immunity from taille and other direct taxes that…

The Iron Age in the Upper Thames Basin
Prehistoric Economy in the Mount Carmel Area of Palestine
This study is concerned with the exploitation of resources by human groups in the Carmel area over a period of about 50,000 years. To this end an attempt is made to evaluate the changing economic potential of the ‘catchments’ of individual sites, for this enables us to make a comparative analysis of hunting-gathering and agricultural economies. Although the study of prehistoric sites is now usually complemented by some treatment of their setting,…
