An Economic Geography of West Africa
Four main themes are discussed : the continuing importance of the traditional economy, the modernization of this economy, regional variations and anomalies in the modernization process and conflicts between traditional and modernizing elements in the economy. Niamey and the two cuestas of massive Cambrian sandstone which are aligned ENE.WSW., between 12 and 20 kilometres north of Ayerou. Here dunes are rare on the Tertiary sandstone plateaus between Tillaberi and Niamey and only a little more frequent in the tributary valleys. All the dunes examined were fixed by grass and were only recognizable as low ridges, less than 6 metres high, which had evidently been much degraded. All the dunes appeared to b…
