  • Headless relative clauses with a gap: A typological trait of Mesoamerican languages

Open Access•Enrique L Palancar, Roberto Zavala Maldonado et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2024

This paper has two main goals. One is to introduce a type of “headless” (or “antecedentless”) relative clause that presents a gap strategy and that has not been sufficiently discussed in the typological literature. The other is to show that this type of headless relative clause with a gap is a characteristic trait of Mesoamerican languages, since it exists in many languages of the Mesoamerican linguistic area as an important constructional option…

  • Presentación del dossier. Retos, dilemas y tensiones de la intermediación y la investigación social posicionada

Open Access•Carlos Correa Angulo, Natalia De Marinis et al.•ARTICLE•Boletín de Antropología•2024

The dossier addresses the challenges and tensions of mediation in social research, emphasizing participatory methodologies, the positioning of researchers, and the affective implications of fieldwork. It reflects on the importance of mediation in contexts of violence and inequality, where the body and emotions are key elements in the mediation between researchers and communities. The examined research explores how decolonial, feminist, and anti-r…

  • Morphological Split Ergative Alignment and Syntactic Nominative-Accusative Alignment in Pesh

    Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•International Journal of American…•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Pesh (Chibchan, Honduras) has until now been described as having a morphological nominative-accusative alignment. This paper argues that Pesh displays a bilevel split ergative pattern for morphological alignment. On the first level of the system, Pesh features a split alignment that is conditioned by the way the arguments are expressed. It has a nominative-accusative alignment for the obligatory indexing of arguments on the verb and three systems…

  • Overt Topic Marking and Discourse Coherence in Pesh: Between Correlation and Divergence

    Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Anthropological linguistics•2019

In Pesh (Chibchan, Honduras), the topic marker = ma is generally not used for continuing topics or in topic shifts with accessible reference; use of = ma with a topic NP is correlated with thematic discontinuity or referent complexity, including shifted or contrastive topics, antitopics, frame-setting topics, and some continuing topics. Topic constituents other than antitopics are usually clause-initial, and all are marked by particular prosodic …

  • Dinámica lingüística

    Open Access•Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Revista Trace•2018

    Open Access•Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Revista Trace•2018

    Open Access•Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Tlalocan•2013

The Phurhepecha text presented and analyzed here,"The Legend of the Souls", was collected in 1993 in Jarácuaro, Michoacán. Init, the importance given to the offerings made on the "Day of the Dead" can beobserved when the story teller relates how living characters overhear theconversations of the dead souls that return for the offering.

  • Dynamics of Contact-Induced Language Change

Claudine Chamoreau, Isabelle Léglise•BOOK•Dynamics of Contact-Induced…•2012

Open publication The volume deals with previously undescribed morphosyntactic variations and changes appearing in settings involving language contact. Contact-induced changes are defined as dynamic and multiple, involving internal change as well as historical and sociolinguistic factors. A variety of explanations are identified and their relationships are analyzed. Only a multifaceted methodology enables this fine-grained approach to contact-indu…

  • The geographical distribution of typologically diverse comparative constructions of superiority in Purepecha

    Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Dialectologia et Geolinguistica•2012

This paper explores the relations between three domains dealing with linguistic variation: dialectology, typology, and contact linguistics. It aims to contribute to dialectal research that also considers syntactic questions, exploring the syntactic domain of comparative constructions of superiority in Purepecha (a language isolate spoken in Mexico). I demonstrate that the expression of the comparison of superiority can be mapped onto the language…

  • El encuentro del tabardillo. Introducción a algunos procesos narrativos en purépecha

    Open Access•Claudine Chamoreau•ARTICLE•Tlalocan•2011

The traditional December festivities in the community of Tiríndaro are described by the narrator, the late Agustín Téllez. Don Agustín with his wife had immigrated to Mexico City some time earlier, but they maintained continued contact with their community. Tata Agustín’s knowledge and great interest in Purepecha, the language, culture and music, motivated him to return for festivities whenever possible. Claudine Chamoreau points out that the acc…
