Urban School Displacement: The Resettlement of a Community School
The East End Community Heritage School (EECHS) was originally established in a diverse working class riverfront neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio. EECHS has now been displaced to a third location outside of its community of origin. The displacements generate increased levels of routine, everyday violence for the kids and raise questions about the school's sustainability, the community served by the school, the possibilities of a working class imag…
Gifting the children: Ritual economy of a community school
This chapter explores the “moral meanings” that intersect with economic realities in the context of a Cincinnati community school located in a diverse working-class neighborhood. The focus is on informal support systems for kids that require adults to expend considerable resources on community children. These practices grow out of a ritualized community ethos of “doing whatever it takes.” Work, gifts, food, and housing are all tied to an informal…

The Teacup Ministry and Other Stories: Subtle Boundaries of Class
In the global world of the twenty-first century, class boundaries are subtle and permeable, though real nonetheless. Markers of identity, authenticity, and belonging can change with a gesture or a glance, making people feel they do or don't belong in certain places, with certain people, at certain times. In these powerfully written ethnographic stories, Rhoda Halperin maps the boundaries of class by examining three themes: crossing class boundari…
Third World at Home: Social Banditry as Metaphor for Urban Grassroots Leaders in A U.S. Midwestern City
Social Banditry Offers a useful metaphor for urban grassroots leaders in an enclaved working class community in the mid western United States. Bandits operate at the borders of social strata, at times teetering precariously on the edges of the communities and classes of which they are a part, and the power structures with which they must deal. The urban hegemonic system views the local leaders and their communities as belonging to the third world…
Practicing Community: Class Culture and Power in an Urban Neighborhood
Cincinnati's East End river community has been home to generations of working-class people. This racially mixed community has roots that reach back as far as seven generations. But the community is vulnerable. Developers bulldoze "raggedy" but affordable housing to build upscale condos, even as East Enders fight to preserve the community by participating in urban development planning controlled by powerful outsiders. This book portrays how East E…

Opening ParagraphThe purpose of this paper is to examine in detail a mode of economic integration, redistribution, and its relationship to political power. The redistributive institution studied here involves assumption of the title halak'a by a male citizen. 'We catch the halak'a!' say the Dorze (halak'a aikos), implying by their choice of verb that candidates show some reluctance to disburse their economic resources upon feasts and fees. During…
