The Cambridge Companion to Amy Beach
Amy Beach was a pathbreaking composer and pianist who transcended the restrictions of nineteenth-century Boston to become America's most famous turn-of-the-century female composer and, later in her career, a prominent performing artist and promoter of music education. “I'm Workin’ on My Buildin”
Florence Price (1887–1953) was instrumental in establishing a “black musical idiom” in the twentieth century (Samantha Ege, 2020) by embedding vernacular songs into her works, including Violin Fantasy No. 2 in F-sharp minor, built on “I'm workin’ on my Buildin.’” In 1940 she arranged the melody as the second of the Two Traditional Negro Spirituals , finished on March 26, 1940. On March 29 and 30, 1940, she quickly dispatched Fantasy No. 2. Price …
Nineteenth-Century Piano Music
First Published in 2004. 19th-Century Piano Music focuses on the core composers of the 19th-century repertoire, beginning with 2 chapters giving a general overview of the repertoire and keyboard technique of the era, and then individual chapters on Beethoven, Schubert, Weber, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, and the women composers of the era, particularly focusing on Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann
Fanny Hensel
Granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and sister of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Fanny Hensel (1805–47) was an extraordinary musician who left well over four hundred compositions, most of which fell into oblivion until their rediscovery late in the 20th century. This book offers a compelling, authoritative account of Hensel's life and music, and her struggle to emerge as a publicly recognized composer.
Mendelssohn
Fanny Hensel, the other Mendelssohn
Fanny Hensel (1805-1847) was an extraordinary musician and astute observer of European culture. Previously she was known mainly as the granddaughter of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn and the sister of composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, yet Hensel is now recognized as the leading woman composer of the nineteenth century. She produced well over four hundred compositions and excelled in short, lyrical piano pieces and songs of epigrammatic intensi…
The Joys of Dilettantism (1843–1845)
By composing music for the first scene (H-U 389), Fanny effectively brought Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's verses out of the private library into the realm of “public” music making. To that end, she sent a copy to Franz Hauser and asked him to consider performing her setting with his Singverein in Vienna, so that she might join his “league”. Fanny Hensel confessed that she had envisioned the work with orchestral accompaniment but, limited by her ow…
