  • Studying full-shift inhalation exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) among Latino workers in very small-sized beauty salons and auto repair shops

Open Access•Nathan Lothrop, Flor Sandoval et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Background: One in every 200 US jobs is in a beauty salon or auto repair shop, where workers are regularly exposed to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may cause a range of short- and long-term health issues. In these shops, Latino workers are overrepresented and lack culturally and linguistically appropriate industrial hygiene resources. This leaves a gap in knowledge on inhalation exposures to VOCs in this hard-to-reach and ubiquitous work…

  • Sampling Low Air Pollution Concentrations at a Neighborhood Scale in a Desert U.S. Metropolis with Volatile Weather Patterns

    Open Access•Nathan Lothrop, Nicolás López-Gálvez et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

As the climate changes, sampling methods should be reevaluated for accuracy and precision, especially those that do not operate continuously. This is even more critical for low-pollution airsheds, as studies on low air pollution concentrations will help determine how such ambient exposures relate to health outcomes

  • Wastewater Surveillance for Sars-CoV-2 on College Campuses: Initial Efforts, Lessons Learned, and Research Needs

    Open Access•Sasha Harris-Lovett, Kara L Nelson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Wastewater surveillance for the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an emerging approach to help identify the risk of a coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. This tool can contribute to public health surveillance at both community (wastewater treatment system) and institutional (e.g., colleges, prisons, and nursing homes) scales. This paper explores the successes, challenges, and lessons learned from initial wastewa…

  • Responsibility for chemical exposures: Perspectives from small beauty salons and auto shops in southern metropolitan Tucson

Open Access•Amanda A Lee, Maia Ingram et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Through our analysis of the interviews, we examine how neoliberal occupational and environmental policies funnel responsibility for controlling chemical exposures down to individuals in small businesses with limited resources, obscuring the power structures that maintain environmental health injustices. We conclude with a call for upstream policy changes that more effectively regulate and hold accountable the manufacturers of chemical products us…

  • Migrant Farmworkers’ Exposure to Pesticides in Sonora, Mexico

    Open Access•Nicolás López-Gálvez, Rietta Wagoner et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

Expanding agribusiness in Sonora, a state in Northern Mexico, has increased the demand for temporary migrant agricultural workers. Sonora is one of the top states in Mexico for pesticide utilization. We conducted an exploratory study to evaluate exposure to organophosphate (OP) and pyrethroid pesticides among migrant farmworkers. A sample of 20 migrant farmworkers was recruited from a large commercial grape farm during the harvest season. We admi…

  • Community-level characteristics and environmental factors of child respiratory illnesses in Southern Arizona

Open Access•Nathan Lothrop, Khaleel S Hussaini et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2017

Our study revealed complex, multi-factorial associations between predictors and outcomes. Findings indicate that many rural areas with lower SES have distinct factors for childhood respiratory diseases that require further investigation. County-wide differences in maternal characteristics or agricultural land uses (not tested here) may also play a role in Pima County residence protecting against hospitalizations, when compared to Maricopa County.…

  • Association of Children’s Urinary CC16 Levels with Arsenic Concentrations in Multiple Environmental Media

Open Access•Paloma I Beamer, Paloma Beamer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

Arsenic exposure has been associated with decreased club cell secretory protein (CC16) levels in adults. Further, both arsenic exposure and decreased levels of CC16 in childhood have been associated with decreased adult lung function. Our objective was to determine if urinary CC16 levels in children are associated with arsenic concentrations in environmental media collected from their homes. Yard soil, house dust, and tap water were taken from 34…
