  • Endogenous Kink Threshold Regression

Jianhan Zhang, Chaoyi Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2025

This article considers an endogenous kink threshold regression model with an unknown threshold value in a time series as well as a panel data framework, where both the threshold variable and regressors are allowed to be endogenous. We construct our estimators from a nonparametric control function approach and derive the consistency and asymptotic distribution of our proposed estimators. Monte Carlo simulations are used to assess the finite sample…

  • Heterogeneity of institutions and model uncertainty in the income inequality nexus

Open Access•Pınar Deniz, Pinar Deniz et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2025•Referências: 134

This study revisits the drivers of income inequality with political institutions at the core. We take a multidimensional institutional approach by defining political institutions in terms of governance, political freedom, political fragmentation and political scale. We carry out an extensive empirical analysis of the role of political institutions by decomposing it into distinct elements and providing available proxies for each dimension. Conside…

  • Bribery, regulation and firm performance

Open Access•Chaoyi Chen, Mehmet Pinar et al.•ARTICLE•Empirical Economics•2024

Firm-level bribery and regulation are two of the many determinants of firm performance. However, most of the existing studies examine the direct and linear effects of bribery and regulation and overlook their indirect effects. Using firm-level data, covering 20,343 firms in 78 developing countries, and employing a threshold model, the effects of firm performance’s standard determinants vary based on the bribery and regulation levels. Our findings…

  • Bribery, on-the-job training, and firm performance

Open Access•Spyridon Boikos, Mehmet Pinar et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2023

The previous literature has extensively examined the effect of firm-level bribery on firm performance but not through on-the-job training. This paper investigates the impact of paying bribes on the firm’s investment decisions in on-the-job training and offers mediating implications of corruption on firm performance. We empirically examine the relationship between bribery and on-the-job training using firm-level data from the World Bank Enterprise…

  • Threshold effects during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis

Michael Polemis, Thanasis Stengos•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2022

The empirical analysis employs a static threshold model using a daily dataset over the six months from the first confirmed European COVID-19 case (25 January 2020). The results indicate that the investigated relationship is non-monotonic (‘U-shaped’) depending on the intensity of the lockdown measures proxied by the Coronavirus Government Response Tracker Index (CGR)

  • Measuring the presence of organized crime across Italian provinces

Open Access•Giovanni Bernardo, Irene Brunetti et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Law and…•2021

The existing literature identifies different indicators to construct organized crime indices and places equal importance to different concepts of organized crime. This paper examines the sensitivity of organized crime across Italian provinces when different set of indicators and weights are used to combine crime indicators. Our findings suggest that there is a remarkable variation in the distribution of organized crime across Italian provinces ba…

  • Are Aid Flows Excessive or Insufficient? Estimating the Growth Impact of Aid in Threshold Regressions

Open Access•Sarantis Kalyviti, Sarantis Kalyvitis et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2012•Referências: 2

Existing empirical studies and policy reports provide ambiguous results on the growth effect of foreign aid flows in the recipient countries. The present paper examines whether there exists an aid threshold that determines the growth impact of foreign aid. We use a threshold regression methodology to estimate growth specifications and the associated aid thresholds in a sample of 42 aid recipients covering the period 1970–2000. Our findings indica…

  • Estimates of the Black Economy Based on Consumer Demand Approaches

    Open Access•Panayiota Lyssiotou, Panos Pashardes et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2004•Citada por: 18•Referências: 35

We propose a consumer demand system approach to estimating the size of the black economy where alternative hypotheses affecting the empirical results can be tested in a nested framework. This approach allows for the estimation of the under‐reporting of household income from various sources, dispensing with the need to use arbitrary criteria to classify households by their main source of income. It also avoids potential bias in black economy estim…

  • The Environmental Kuznets Curve

Daniel L Millimet, John A List et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2003

We explore the importance of modeling strategies when estimating the emissions-income relationship. Using U.S. state-level panel data on nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide emissions, we estimate several environmental Kuznets curves using the standard parametric framework as well as a more flexible semiparametric alternative. Formal statistical comparisons of the results overwhelmingly reject the parametric approach. Moreover, the differences, part…

  • Wage Rigidity in Canadian Collective Bargaining Agreements

    Open Access•Louis N Christofides, Thanasis Stengos•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2003•Referências: 23

The authors search information on the provisions of 10,947 wage contracts signed in the Canadian unionized sector between 1976 and 1999 for evidence of downward nominal wage rigidity (the disinclination of wages to fall, in nominal dollars, below their established level). Over the sample period, real wage reductions were common, but nominal wage reductions were rare. The probability of downward nominal wage rigidity increased substantially during…

  • Preference Heterogeneity and the Rank of Demand Systems

Panayiota Lyssiotou, Panos Pashardes et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1999

This article examines the effect of preference heterogeneity on nonparametric and parametric tests of the rank of demand systems. Using samples of households drawn from the U.K. Family Expenditure Survey, we find that preference heterogeneity increases the rank of demand systems. When the effects of household characteristics on demand are removed by semiparametric techniques, a rank-3 demand system appears to be an adequate empirical specificatio…
