Is a Contradiction Between Arguments Less Likely to be Noticed When They are Implicit? An Experimental Case Study
The paper investigates whether contradictory arguments are less likely to be noticed when they are expressed implicitly rather than explicitly. It builds on the fact that—in natural language productions—contradictions are often not logical but rather— lato sensu —pragmatic in nature. The study presents an experiment using ecological and slightly modified material. In a Facebook post, Italian journalist Selvaggia Lucarelli conveyed two contradicto…
Presupposition, assertion, and epistemic vigilance across development
This study investigates how linguistic framing—specifically, the use of presupposition versus assertion—affects the critical evaluation of incoming information across development. While presuppositions present content as taken for granted, assertions introduce information as new, leading to differing levels of epistemic scrutiny. Prior work has shown that adults are less likely to detect falsehoods when they are presupposed rather than asserted. …
Presupposition
How the speaker presents information linguistically may impact the recipient’s epistemic vigilance. For instance, information communicated through a presupposition suggests it does not warrant thorough scrutiny. Traditionally, presuppositions arise from the use of various linguistic triggers, but it has been suggested that a focal status can suspend the triggering of the presupposition. Using a mistake recognition task, we investigate whether the…
Aggression and disagreement in public communication
The persuasive effectiveness of implicit strategies, associated with reduced epistemic vigilance, may lead to their exploitation in conveying doubtful information in advertisement and propaganda. In political communication, presuppositions tend to specialize for the conveyance of questionable opinions and self-praise, while implicatures reveal a preferential association with face-threatening contents in general, where implicitness can allow speak…
The dynamic contribution of implicit meaning to the context
Information structure effects on the processing of nouns and verbs
Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals can reveal the cost required to deal with information structure mismatches in speech or in text contexts. The present study investigates the costs related to the processing of different associations between the syntactic categories of Noun and Verb and the information categories of Topic and Focus. It is hypothesized that – due to the very nature (respectively, predicative and non-predicative) of verbal and n…
Implicit strategies aimed at persuading the audience in public debates
Starting from the assumption that implicit strategies like presuppositions and implicatures can be used to reduce the tendency to critical reaction by addressees of linguistic utterances, which qualifies such strategies as useful persuasive devices, the paper also recalls that for this reason they are a typical ingredient of advertisement and propaganda (Section 1). Reduced epistemic vigilance effected by implicit linguistic packaging is especial…
The persuasive and manipulative power of implicit communication
Manipulative Shallow Processing Induced by Presuppositions and Topics
The paper shows that implicit strategies for questionable contents are frequent in persuasive texts, as compared to texts with other purposes. It proposes that the persuasive and manipulative effectiveness of introducing questionable contents implicitly can be explained through established cognitive patterns, namely that what is felt by addressees as information coming (also) from them and not (only) from the source of the message is less likely …

The relation between mind and language
This article tries to show some specifically linguistic weak points in the Poverty of-the-Stimulus Argument (PSA). Besides some quantitative considerations, from a qualitative point of view it is shown that the innatist tradition underestimates analogy as a resource for children to build their own grammars from the incomplete stimuli they receive from the environment; that knowledge and consciousness of reality surrounding the speech acts are als…
Clause linkage in Japanese
Lehmann (1988) proposed a 'survey' of the most important aspects of complex sentence formation in the languages of the world, that took the form of generally applicable parameters of clause linkage. This article tries to apply such and similar parameters to the patterns shown by Japanese, whose situation is interesting because of the great similarity in structure shown by the majority of its subordinate clause types among each other, and even wit…
