Trade integration, institutions, and environmental quality in Africa
Violence by Association and Participation
This study examines how violent co-offenders shape future offending trajectories, distinguishing between committing violence with a violent co-offender (direct exposure) versus associating with violent accomplices (indirect exposure). Using police data, we applied binary logistic regressions to a sample of Belgian offenders (N = 20,203) to examine the likelihood of general and violent reoffending. Our results show that having a violent co-offende…
A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis of co-offending characteristics
The impact of violent behavior on co-offender selection
Navigating the Social Maze
Social network analysis (SNA) holds great potential for examining the influence of peers and group dynamics on the development of criminal behavior among adolescents as it offers a robust framework for studying complex social interactions. However, there needs to be more knowledge regarding key research findings on deviant adolescent influence using a social network approach. In this integrative literature review, we examine what type of informat…
Ethical implications of network data in business and management settings
Clustering of chronic hepatitis B screening intentions in social networks of Moroccan immigrants in the Netherlands
The findings of our pilot study show clustering of screening intention among individuals in the same network. This provides opportunities for social network interventions to encourage participation in hepatitis B screening initiatives
An exploratory assessment of the preference for eHealth interventions to prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections among men who have sex with men in Hanoi, Vietnam
High acceptance and perceived need for an online HIV/STI intervention were reported. The importance of establishing trust within the MSM community as a reliable source of information was emphasized, as well as the importance of confidentiality
Impact of misinformation in temporal network epidemiology
We investigate the impact of misinformation about the contact structure on the ability to predict disease outbreaks. We base our study on 31 empirical temporal networks and tune the frequencies in errors in the node identities or time stamps of contacts. We find that for both these spreading scenarios, the maximal misprediction of both the outbreak size and time to extinction follows an stretched exponential convergence as a function of the error…
Sexual and Communication Networks of Internet-Mediated Prostitution
This chapter examines prostitution as a socioeconomic phenomenon and discusses its contribution to the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Using online network data from Internet-mediated prostitution in Brazil, it looks at the connectedness of individuals on a review website where clients record intimate details about encounters with sex workers. It begins with an overview of networks, including human sexual networks, along with network p…
The Non-linear Health Consequences of Living in Larger Cities
De re bibliographica
Temporal networks have been increasingly used to model a diversity of systems that evolve in time; for example, human contact structures over which dynamic processes such as epidemics take place. A fundamental aspect of real-life networks is that they are sampled within temporal and spatial frames. Furthermore, one might wish to subsample networks to reduce their size for better visualization or to perform computationally intensive simulations. T…
