Toward a Sociology of Heresy
This paper argues that discussion of heresy has suffered from neglect by sociologists. It attempts to remedy this situation by examining heresy in terms of the 'discursive analysis associated with Derrida and Foucault. It is suggested that heresies still occur, albeit in secular or profane discourses in which they go unrecognized as such. It is further argued that the heretical status of an articulated opinion is determined by the institutionaliz…

I would like to thank Professor Espenshade for his extended discussion of my modest little note. His thoroughness has indeed disclosed an error in the computation of Equation 1 which might otherwise have escaped us. Fortunately, its magnitude has negligible effect on the conclusions reached. A least-squares analysis of the various estimates of the population of London during the seventeenth century discloses the probable degree of error in the work of William Petty and other early demographers. A new “average” population is calculated and the regression equation given which best satisfies the contemporary estimates
