White capitalism within communities of craftivism
When lockdown started, my anxiety kept me on a tight string—I (author 1) remember drowning in intense, omnipresent agitation as I used every “extra” moment I could to research mask styles, adapt patterns published online or distributed by different organizations to increase access to masks for better functionality, and distribute masks to those who needed them via an old ice cream bucket on my front bench . Why are Tailored Messages More Effective? A Multiple Mediation Analysis of a Breast Cancer Screening Intervention
Past research has found that tailoring increases the persuasive effectiveness of a message. However, the observed effect has been small and the explanatory mechanism remains unknown. To address these shortcomings, a tailoring software program was created that personalized breast cancer screening pamphlets according to risk, health belief model constructs, and visual preference. Women aged 40 and older (N = 119) participated in a 2 (Tailored vs. S…
Revisiting the Worksite in Worksite Health Campaigns
This article advances the beginnings of a general theory of organizational features to aid in understanding why health campaigns that work well in one organization may be ineffectual in another organization. The physical, social, and information structures of organizations are theorized to create an interaction environment that is distinct to each organization and that influences health campaigns. To test this argument, an organ donation campaign…
Utilization of Internet Technology by Low-Income Adults
Objectives: To examine whether low-income adults’ utilization of Internet technology is predicted or mediated by health literacy, health numeracy, and computer assistance. Method: Low-income adults ( N = 131) from the midwestern United States were surveyed about their technology access and use. Results: Individuals with low health literacy skills were less likely to use Internet technology (e.g., email, search engines, and online health informati…
The Effectiveness of High- and Low-Intensity Worksite Campaigns to Promote Organ Donation
This study describes a worksite project designed to promote organ donation while testing the effectiveness of low-intensity (media-only) campaigns compared to high intensity campaigns (media+interpersonal communication), which incorporated on-site visits. All campaigns lasted 10 weeks. A total of 45 companies participated in the project, 15 in each quasi-experimental condition. Companies were counterbalanced by size of organization and industry t…
