One Down, Two Involved
About 10% of the US population suffers from depression (NIMH, 2000/2001) affecting both the client and his/her family members. This study applies Inconsistent Nurturing as Control Theory (Le Poire, 1994) to romantic relationships with depressed individuals (N=68 couples) and examines types and patterns of attempts to curtail depression. Results from in-depth interviews of depressed individuals and their partners suggest partners change their comm…

A wide body of research offers compelling evidence for the risk factors associated with the onset of eating disorders, including psychological, biological, and cultural explanations. However, an aspect of disordered eating that has been relatively unexplored is the mechanism that perpetuates the disordered eating behaviors once they have begun. The effects of expectancies and actual communication on nonverbal adaptation and communication outcomes
Guided by interaction adaptation theory, this work continues a tradition of examining the relative effects of cognitive expectancies and actual communication behavior on communication outcomes. Communication relevant expectancies (pleasant versus unpleasant communication) and actual communication (high versus low involvement) were manipulated in the current experiment. Nonverbal cues and interpersonal judgments
Nonverbal cues play a central role in person and social perception. The impact of such cues on participants' and observers' perceptions of relational messages was examined in an experiment in which participants interacted with a confederate who systematically varied his or her communication style then assessed the implicit relational messages in the confederate's communication. Self-Disclosure Responses to Stigmatizing Disclosures
Knowledge gained through symbolic and instrumental interpretations of attitudes toward persons with AIDS suggests that positive attitudes toward gays or persons with AIDS (symbolic factors) and less knowledge and greater fear ofAIDS contraction (instrumental factors) will lead to more convergence of self-disclosure outcomes in interactions with gays or persons withAIDS. This two-part investigation develops a new scale of parental attachment that includes the previously under examined form of role reversal, or being a caregiver for one's parent, and explores the contention that romantic attachment is more dyadic than originally conceived, in that it is a function of an interaction between parental attachment style and specific partner romantic attachment style.
