In Memoriam to Identity
When Taiwanese author Qiu Miaojin ended her life in 1995, she left behind her final work, the experimental novel Last Words from Montmartre. This article outlines some of the challenges in translating Qiu Miaojin's novel from Chinese to English. Donald Hugh Blocher (1928–2013)
This article memorializes Donald Hugh Blocher (1928-2013). Blocher, a giant in counseling psychology, was elected a fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1973, received a Distinguished Achievement Award from Harvard University in 1968, and served as president of APA Division 17 (Society of Counseling Psychology) in 1980. Prevention Activities in Professional Psychology
In this reaction article, the authors provide a historical context for prevention activities and their place in psychological practice. They then discuss the prevention guidelines in the Major Contribution authored by S. M. Hage et al. (2007 [this issue]) and provide their critique. Finally, the authors offer ideas for the future specific applications of these general guidelines and illustrate with a case example
Interpretation Style and Reactance in Counselor's Social Influence
This study compared two different interpretation styles (tentative and absolute), two levels of subjects' reactance (high and low), and gender on the counselor's social influence, willingness to see the counselor, willingness to help, ability to help, and subjects' anger. The Purpose, Philosophy, Content, and Structure of Doctoral Comprehensive/Qualifying Exams
To gather information about comprehensive/qualifying examinations, the authors surveyed the 64 programs that composed the Council of Counseling Psychology Training programs as well as six nonmember training directors A four-page questionnaire was mailed to these program directors, with 53 (76%) questionnaires being returned. The Staffing Conference
In an attempt to confront the problem of student evaluation, the staffing conference was developed as a quality control mechanism to monitor the student's progress through the program. This article describes the structure and process of the staffing conference and discusses some of the resulting benefits that have accrued to staff, students, and the counseling program as a whole
Effects of Immediate Reinforcement and Awareness of Response on Beginning Counselor Behavior
This investigation studied the effects of immediate reinforcement and awareness of response class on the acquisition of a complex counselor behavior by beginning counselors. Sixteen counselors conducted seven interviews each in a naturalistic setting, and their emission of confrontive relationship statements was studied.
