  • Job loss and mental health

Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Nicolas Hérault et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2026

Job loss is known to adversely affect mental health, but the time course of recovery and the role of anticipation remain unclear. Using 22 annual waves (2001-2022) of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, we estimate fixed-effects models to examine the relationship between redundancy and mental health (SF-36), incorporating subjective probability of job loss to refine anticipation measures. The final sample consis…

  • Is the Public Sector Losing the Battle for Talent? Evidence from long French Panel Data

Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Audrey Etienne et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025•Referências: 50

We exploit an exceptionally long administrative panel dataset (1988–2019) for France to estimate the unconditional quantile effects of public sector employment, while accounting for individual fixed effects. We find that the public sector wage gap is broadly negative across the whole wage distribution after controlling for observable and unobservable heterogeneities. The public sector compresses the wage distribution, with particularly large wage…

  • Social gaps, perceived inequality and protests

    Open Access•Olivier Bargain, H Xavier Jara et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2025•Referências: 17

Latent feelings of economic vulnerability and social stagnation may have catalyzed the unprecedented uprisings that shook Latin America and other parts of the world in 2018–2019. We document this process in the context of Chile, leveraging survey data on protest participation and its potential determinants. Specifically, we construct a “social gap” index, measuring the disconnect between objective and perceived social status. Our findings suggest…

  • Informality, self‐employment and heterogeneous managerial ability

Open Access•Eliane Badaoui, Olivier Bargain et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2024

The view of informal employment as a last resort in the labour market has recently been challenged by numerous studies documenting the existence of a high degree of heterogeneity within the formal and informal sectors. In particular, informal self‐employment/employment may be voluntary or forced. There is currently not much theoretical support for these observations. We develop a theoretical model of the labour market with both formal and informa…

  • New Evidence on Welfare’s Disincentive for the Youth Using Administrative Panel Data

Olivier Bargain, Olivier B Bargain et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2024

We estimate the impact of social assistance on youth employment in Denmark, 2000 to 2006. For childless unmarried individuals, maximum welfare payments increased by 55% at age 25. Using administrative panel data, we find a significant disincentive effect among the low-skilled only, for whom employment fell by 2% to 3% and benefit take-up increased by 10% to 14%. Two-thirds of the effect is attributable to transitions from work to welfare and one-…

Traditional family norms often have persistent effects on household decisiond. We question wether kinship ancestries of post-marital residence still affect household consumption sharing. • Intrahousehold Resource Allocation and Individual Poverty

    Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Guy Lacroix et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2022•Citada por: 8•Referências: 66

Welfare analyses conducted by policy practitioners around the world usually rely on equivalised or per capita expenditures and ignore the extent of within-household inequality. Recent advances in the estimation of collective models suggest ways to retrieve the complete sharing process within families using homogeneity assumptions (typically preference stability upon exclusive goods across individuals or household types) and the observation of exc…

  • The Economic Gains of Closing The Employment Gender Gap

Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Maria Carmela Lo Bue•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2021

The present paper sheds new light on the growth implications of gender inequalities in the Moroccan labour market. We confront two different approaches. The first one is based on firm data to estimate gender complementarity in production and uses this information for simulations based on a simple macroeconomic model. The second relies on country panel variation to relate growth to the relative employment of women and, also, suggest simulations fo…

  • Undeclared Work – Evidence from France

    Open Access•Laila AitBihiOuali, Olivier Bargain•ARTICLE•Economie et Statistique /…•2021•Referências: 16

This study quantifies undeclared work patterns in France using a unique pilot survey which collects data on households' demand and supply of undeclared work (Enquête pilote auprès des ménages sur la fraude). It also proposes an international comparison at the European level using Eurobarometer data. Socio-demographic characteristics fail to explain the variance in undeclared work, while subjective factors are strongly associated with house-holds’…

Over the last decades, Latin American countries have experienced a noticeable decrease in income inequality. While this trend is mainly associated with a decline in wage inequality, progressive reforms of the tax-benefit systems of the region may have played a role. While redistributive systems in Latin America are still in their infancy, they are constantly expanding and do so at different pace in the region. To investigate this point in a compa…

  • Own-wage labor supply elasticities

Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Andreas Peichl•ARTICLE•IZA Journal of Labor Economics•2016

There is a huge variation in the size of labor supply elasticities in the literature, which hampers policy analysis. While recent studies show that preference heterogeneity across countries explains little of this variation, we focus on two other important features: observation period and estimation method. We start with a thorough survey of existing evidence for both Western Europe and the USA, over a long period and from different empirical app…

Physical and cognitive skills, co-determined with stature early in life, do not explain much of the height earnings premium directly. This article explores the effects of remittance receipt on child labour in an African context. We focus on Burkina Faso, a country with a high prevalence of child labour and a high rate of migration. Given the complex relationship between remittance receipt and household time allocation decisions, we instrument remittances using economic conditions in remittance-sending countries and explore heterogeneous effects across different types of potenti…

• Fiscal union in Europe? Redistributive and stabilizing effects of a European tax-benefit system and fiscal equalization mechanism

Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Mathias Dolls et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Policy•2013

The current debt crisis has given rise to a debate concerning deeper fiscal integration in Europe. The view is widespread that moving towards a ‘fiscal union’ would have stabilizing effects in case of macroeconomic shocks. We study the economic effects of introducing two elements of a fiscal union: an EU-wide tax and transfer system and a fiscal equalization mechanism. Using the European tax-benefit calculator EUROMOD, we exploit representative h…

The present paper focuses on new outputs of particular interest for the current policy debate on in-work versus tradit…

We find that own-wage elasticities are relatively small and more uniform across countries than previously considered. Nonetheless, such differences do exist, and are found not to arise from different tax-benefit systems, wage/hour levels, or demographic compositions across co…

This paper assesses the effects of U.S. tax policy reforms on inequality over around three decades, from 1979 to 2007. It applies a new method for decomposing changes in government redistribution into (1) a direct policy effect resulting from policy changes and (2) the effects of changing market incomes. Over the period as a whole, the tax policy changes increased income inequality by pushing up the income share of high‐income earners (the top 20…

    Open Access•Olivier Bargain, Olivier Donni•ARTICLE•Economica•2014•Referências: 33

Using a collective model of consumption, we characterize optimal commodity taxes aimed at targeting specific individuals within the household. The main message is that distortionary indirect taxation can circumvent the agency problem of the household. Essentially, taxation should discourage less the consumption of a certain group of goods—those for which the slope of the Engel curves is larger for the targeted person
