Give Me a Pass
Although microcredit has reached millions, recent randomised evaluations find limited average business impacts. Contract rigidity, specifically the fixed and frequent instalments, may restrict moral hazard but limit productive risk-taking, thus limiting the impact. With a Colombian lender, we experimentally compared, for a sample of new borrowers, a standard rigid loan to a more flexible loan that included three “passes” with which borrowers coul…
Banking with Agents
This paper uses a randomized controlled \n trial to study the effects of access to agent banking. \n Individuals were encouraged to open an account and transact \n at a banking agent or a branch of a financial institution. \n Compared with individuals who were sent to the branch, \n individuals sent to an agent increased the number of \n transactions and incurred lower transaction costs with the \n agent. These transactions are, however, only hal…
Efficient irrigation and water conservation
Widespread adoption of efficient irrigation technologies, including drip irrigation, has been proposed to limit groundwater over-exploitation, especially in water-stressed South Asia. This paper evaluates the potential productivity and water-saving benefits of smallholder drip irrigation by conducting a randomized control trial in Andhra Pradesh, India. A group of well-owners was offered a subsidy to adopt drip irrigation, while a comparable grou…
Mission and the Bottom Line
We assess the role of monetary incentives in a mission-oriented organization by randomly assigning workers to one of two bonus schemes, incentivizing either the performance of a microcredit program (bottom line) or the empowerment of clients (mission). We find that the credit bonus improved credit-related outcomes but undermined the social mission, while the social bonus did not harm the bottom line. These results are consistent with a multitaski…

Money or Management? A Field Experiment on Constraints to Entrepreneurship in Rural Pakistan
This paper identifies the relative importance of human and physical capital for entrepreneurship. Microfinance clients were offered business training and a loan lottery of up to seven times the average loan size. Business training increased business knowledge, reduced business failure, improved business practices, and increased household expenditures by US$82 per year. It also improved financial and labor allocation decisions. These effects are c…
Agent banking in a highly under-developed financial sector
Revising Commitments
We implement an artefactual field experiment in rural Malawi to study revisions of prior choices regarding future income receipts. This allows examination of intertemporal choice revision and its determinants. New tests provide evidence of self‐control problems for some participants. Revisions of money allocations towards the present are positively associated with refined measures of present‐bias from an earlier survey and with the randomly assig…
Mission and the Bottom Line
The impact of performance pay in institutions with multiple goals depends on complementarities in the disutility cost of effort and how different tasks interact to achieve each goal. Workers of a mission-oriented nonprofit were randomly assigned to one of two bonus schemes, each incentivizing one of its two main operational goals: the performance of its microcredit program and the strengthening of community institutions of the poor. This study fi…
Savings defaults and payment delays for cash transfers
Facilitating Savings for Agriculture
We implemented a randomized intervention among Malawian farmers aimed at facilitating formal savings for agricultural inputs. Treated farmers were offered the opportunity to have their cash crop harvest proceeds deposited directly into new bank accounts in their own names, while farmers in the control group were paid harvest proceeds in cash (the status quo). The treatment led to higher savings in the months immediately before the next agricultur…
Barriers to Household Risk Management
Why do many households remain exposed to large exogenous sources of nonsystematic income risk? We use a series of randomized field experiments in rural India to test the importance of price and nonprice factors in the adoption of an innovative rainfall insurance product. Demand is significantly price sensitive, but widespread take-up would not be achieved even if the product offered a payout ratio comparable to US insurance contracts. We present …

Does a Picture Paint a Thousand Words? Evidence from a Microcredit Marketing Experiment
Female entrepreneurship is low in many developing economies partly because of constraints on women's time and mobility, which are often reinforced by social norms. This paper analyzes a marketing experiment designed to encourage women to adopt a new microcredit product. A brochure with the same content but two different covers was randomly distributed among male and female borrowing groups. One cover featured five businesses run by men, while the…

Patterns of Rainfall Insurance Participation in Rural India
Take-up of an innovative rainfall insurance policy offered to smallholder farmers in rural India decreases with basis risk between insurance payouts and income fluctuations, increases with household wealth, and decreases with binding credit constraints. These results are consistent with the predictions of a simple neoclassical model with borrowing constraints. Other patterns are less consistent with the benchmark model. For example, participation…
