Women's experience of internment
The British government interned some 4,000 women in the panic situation of May‐June 1940. The tribunals had graded nearly all of them ‘B’ and a large proportion were in actual fact refugees from Nazi Germany. Most of them were eventually taken to Rushen camp on the Isle of Man. Here they were treated relatively easily and quickly organized self‐help groups and activities, as is seen from the many personal reminiscences quoted. As irrationally as …

One of the most notorious camps was Warth Mill at Bury, Lancashire. A disused cotton-mill, pressed into service early on, it genuinely (and all too sensibly) was purely a transit camp. Peter Katz was amongst the first of its enemy-alien inhabitants.
The Isle of Men (I)
The Isle of Man eventually became the main internment centre for those detained in Britain. Internees were brought from all the other camps and many of these were closed down or used for different purposes.
