The distribution, chronology and significance of late Holocene aged stone-based structures on Pitta Pitta Country, western Queensland
There is considerable discourse around the timing of Australia's interior colonisation and whether environmental or technological impacts pushed people into occupying more arid environments. However, the general scarcity of rockshelter sites and the limited amount of research undertaken to date in central western Queensland has meant this region has only been peripherally considered in such debates. It is well recognised that, by the time Europea…
Vegetation over the last glacial maximum at Girraween Lagoon, monsoonal northern Australia
Northern Australia is a region where limited information exists on environments at the last glacial maximum (LGM). Girraween Lagoon is located on the central northern coast of Australia and is a site representative of regional tropical savanna woodlands. Girraween Lagoon remained a perennial waterbody throughout the LGM, and as a result retains a complete proxy record of last-glacial climate, vegetation and fire. This study combines independent p…

Morphological analysis and radiocarbon dating of non-returning boomerangs from Cooper Creek/Kinipapa (Northeast South Australia)
In this article we present the results of a morphological analysis of four mostly complete non-returning boomerangs and one shaped wooden fragment recovered in 2017 and 2018 from Cooper Creek near Innamincka in South Australia’s far northeast. This archaeological collection forms one of only six known/published wooden artefact assemblages in the country. We also detail the results of the direct accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14C) …
Ages for Australia's oldest rock paintings
Direct AMS 14 C Analysis of Carbonate
We have investigated the possibility of direct accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) measurement of carbonate samples at ANSTO using the STAR 2 MV tandem accelerator. Each carbonate sample was powdered, mixed with metal powder and pressed into an aluminum cathode for direct carbonate measurement by AMS 14 C. Of the three high-purity metal powders (Fe, Nb, and Ag) used in our investigation, Nb was found to be the best metal, which d…
Partitioning of Microbially Respired CO 2 Between Indigenous and Exogenous Carbon Sources During Biochar Degradation Using Radiocarbon and Stable Carbon Isotopes
Pyrolized carbon in biochar can sequester atmospheric CO 2 into soil to reduce impacts of anthropogenic CO 2 emissions. When estimating the stability of biochar, degradation of biochar carbon, mobility of degradation products, and ingress of carbon from other sources must all be considered. In a previous study we tracked degradation in biochars produced from radiocarbon-free wood and subjected to different physico-chemical treatments over three y…
The origin of objects of invertebrate descent from the Khvalynsk Eneolithic cemeteries (Northern Caspian region)
Early human occupation of a maritime desert, Barrow Island, North-West Australia
How old is X-ray art? Minimum age determinations for early X-ray rock art from the ‘Red Lily’ (Wulk) Lagoon rock art precinct, western Arnhem Land
Radiocarbon age constraints for a Pleistocene–Holocene transition rock art style
Time History of a Human Kidney Stone Determined by Bomb-Pulse Dating
An in vivo grown human kidney stone was dated using the atmospheric bomb pulse. The growth period was found to be 17.6 yr for a sample size of 6 mm across. The step dissolution method was used, as one of several possibilities, to produce depositional subsamples. A noticeable dead carbon presence is detected in the modern industrialized diet, and as a consequence in human metabolites. The importance for correction when applying bomb-pulse dating i…
Embryotomy in the 19th Century of Central Italy
An enormous earthquake in L'Aquila in 2009 brought to light human bodies buried in the underground rooms of the medieval St. John the Evangelist church (Casentino, Central Italy). Among the remains, we discovered a human fetus, whose post‐cranial bones were wrapped in bandages and cranial bones were reallocated inside a sort of hood. Anthropometrical investigation revealed an age at death of 29 ± 2 weeks of pregnancy for the little mummy. Radiogr…
Building the Radiocarbon Chronology for the Archaeological Site Ufa-II, Bashkortostan, Russia
A suite of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates for the Ufa-II archaeological site in Bashkortostan, Russia, is obtained for the first time. Dating was done on charcoal samples from a sequence of cultural deposits collected during the 2011 digging season. An age-depth chronology is established using the Bayesian deposition General Outlier P_Sequence model. The oldest age for the site at the horizon immediately over the sterile gr…
Early bronze in two Holocene archaeological sites in Gansu, NW China
Understanding of the origin and development of bronze technology in eastern Asia remains unresolved. Here we report on the distribution of copper and associated cations in sediments from Huoshiliang in northwestern Gansu, China, strontium and lead isotope analyses of ore and slag samples, and some artifact fragments at archaeological sites at Ganggangwa and Huoshiliang in the Black River valley. We conclude that bronze production began perhaps as…
