  • Contested ‘commune rurales’

Open Access•Karen Büscher, Stéphanie Perazzone et al.•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2024

This article explores how decentralisation policy and specifically the establishment of communes rurales in DR Congo turned into a profoundly destabilising juncture, shaking existing governance arrangements. In particular, we examine how this has led to a reshuffle of power and a renegotiation of public authoritiy. By analysing the impact of decentralisation on the construction of and competition over public authority in three Congolese towns – R…

  • Why time matters for understanding the ASM-LSM nexus in south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

    Open Access•Jeroen Cuvelier•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern African…•2023

This article highlights the importance of studying the politics of time in the copper and cobalt mining sector of south-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where a tense coexistence can be observed between artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) and large-scale mining (LSM). It is argued that inequality in ASM-LSM settings not only manifests itself spatially but also temporally. Faced with an uncertain future, ASM and LSM actors do not have the …

  • From ‘conflict minerals’ to peace? Reviewing mining reforms, gender, and state performance in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo

Open Access•Claude Iguma Wakenge, Marie-Rose Bashwira Nyenyezi et al.•ARTICLE•The Extractive Industries and…•2021•Citada por: 12•Referências: 23

For the last two decades, the Congolese Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has been undergoing reforms of its governing structures. A recurrent argument supporting the reforms — predominantly in the 3T ASM sector (i.e. tin, tantalum and tungsten) — is that artisanal mining feeds violence (including sexual violence), conflicts, underdevelopment, and poverty. The reforms have been extensively studied, and academic research in turn has tr…

  • Money, migration and masculinity among artisanal miners in Katanga (DR Congo)

    Jeroen Cuvelier•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2016•Citada por: 12•Referências: 13

The Katangese artisanal mining sector has grown spectacularly since the late 1990s. Faced with political instability and economic crisis, tens of thousands of men have moved to the mining areas in order to find new sources of income. This article offers a detailed ethnographic description of how male migrant workers experience and cope with the challenging realities of life on the mines against the backdrop of recent changes in Katanga’s politica…

  • Containers, Carriers, Vehicles”

Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga, Jeroen Cuvelier et al.•ARTICLE•Transfers•2016•Citada por: 7

This introduction launches the new portfolio of articles on African mobilities and situates the three articles of this special section within the portfolio’s approach. This could be summarized in three key objectives. First, it seeks to highlight the inadequacy of enthusing in Africa simply as a venue where the itineraries of things and people from outside take place. Second, African mobilities is a way to signal the mobilities of Africans and th…

  • Work and Masculinity in Katanga's Artisanal Mines

    Open Access•Jeroen Cuvelier•ARTICLE•Africa Spectrum•2014•Citada por: 34•Referências: 48

This article, based on 16 months of anthropological fieldwork between 2005 and 2012, examines the relationship between work and masculinity among artisanal miners, or creuseurs, in Katanga, the southeastern province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It argues that men's involvement in artisanal mining should be considered not only as an economic survival strategy but also as an attempt to experiment with new ways of being a man in a contex…

  • Doing business out of war. An analysis of the UPDF's presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Koen Vlassenroot, Sandrine Perrot et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Eastern African Studies•2012•Citada por: 13•Referências: 21

This paper analyses how Ugandan army commanders have mobilised transborder economic networks to exploit economic opportunities in eastern DRC during the military intervention of the Ugandan People's Defence Force (UPDF) in Congo's wars (1996-97; 1998-2003). These transborder networks are the starting point of our evaluation of the informal political structures and networks linking Uganda's political centre to Congo's war complex. While it is ofte…
