A close examination of the colour red in Anne Carson’s Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse shows that in it colour extends beyond the synaesthetic experience theorized by the ancient poets. Cartographic Explorations of Self in Michael Ondaatje's Running in the Family and Jacques Poulin's Volkswagen Blues
Shaped by both those who make and read them, maps generate a two-way transformative process whereby subjective imagination inscribes and re-inscribes place with meaning and, at the same time, prompts the subject to figure and re-configure portrayals of self as reflected in the charting of place. An examination of the use of photography in Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes sheds light on how the photographic documentary is secured in life writing.
