  • Characterizing and communicating uncertainty

Open Access•Robert E Kennedy, Sylvia Serbin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Navigating uncertainty is a critical challenge in all fields of science, especially when translating knowledge into real-world policies or management decisions. However, the wide variance in concepts and definitions of uncertainty across scientific fields hinders effective communication. As a microcosm of diverse fields within Earth Science, NASA’s Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) provides a useful crucible in which to identify cross-cutting concep…

  • Reducing uncertainty of high-latitude ecosystem models through identification of key parameters

Open Access•Hannah Mevenkamp, Nico Wunderling et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Climate change is having significant impacts on Earth’s ecosystems and carbon budgets, and in the Arctic may drive a shift from an historic carbon sink to a source. Large uncertainties in terrestrial biosphere models (TBMs) used to forecast Arctic changes demonstrate the challenges of determining the timing and extent of this possible switch. This spread in model predictions can limit the ability of TBMs to guide management and policy decisions. …

  • The Nasa Carbon Monitoring System Phase 2 synthesis

    Open Access•G C Hurtt, A E Andrews et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Underlying policy efforts to address global climate change is the scientific need to develop the methods to accurately measure and model carbon stocks and fluxes across the wide range of spatial and temporal scales in the Earth system. Initiated in 2010, the NASA Carbon Monitoring System is one of the most ambitious relevant science initiatives to date, exploiting the satellite remote sensing resources, computational capabilities, scientific know…

  • Landscape-scale characterization of Arctic tundra vegetation composition, structure, and function with a multi-sensor unoccupied aerial system

Open Access•Dedi Yang, Bailey D Morrison et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

The Arctic is experiencing some of the most rapid climate change on Earth, with strong impacts on tundra ecosystems that are characterized by high land-surface and vegetation heterogeneity. Previous studies have explored this complexity using satellite remote sensing, however these typically coarse spatial resolution data have generally missed sub-pixel heterogeneity, leaving critical gaps in our understanding of tundra vegetation dynamics from t…

  • Impacts of recent climate change on Wisconsin corn and soybean yield trends

Open Access•Christopher J Kucharik, Sylvia Serbin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2008

The US Corn Belt supports agroecosystems that flourish in a temperate climate regime that could see significant changes in the next few decades. Because Wisconsin is situated on the northern, cooler fringes of this region, it may be the beneficiary of a warmer climate that could help support higher corn and soybean yields. Here we show that trends in precipitation and temperature during the growing season from 1976–2006 explained 40 % and 35 % of…
