Foundations of an Expanded Community of Fate
We develop a representation of markets, states, and civil society as aspects of institutions and policies that might provide the foundations of the expanded community of fate proposed by Margaret Levi and Zachary Ugolnik. What we term our “synergy simplex” provides a language and roadmap for researching and debating the alternatives, a process that the authors (and the moral political economy project they lead) have so fruitfully launched
The Transformation of the German Social Model
Market and state actors' responses to Germany's reunification and its economic repercussions partially liberalized its social model, increasing segmentation between a decreasing core labor force with job security and an increasing proportion of workers with atypical, less secure, and typically lower paid jobs. Collective bargaining was decentralized and its wage-setting role diminished, permitting increased wage dispersion and hours flexibility. …

Measuring Progress in Transition and Towards EU Accession
This article provides new evidence on progress in transition and the ‘readiness’ for accession of enterprises in two EU applicant countries. A major innovation is to benchmark them against Spain. Approximately 200 manufacturing firms were surveyed in each of Poland, Romania and Spain. The new east German economy
This paper identifies three different problems faced by the east German economy in the wake of reunification. The first is the problem of transition in which an effective state has to be established, and credible macroeconomic conditions, powerful market forces, a functioning banking system and effective corporate governance of enterprises introduced. The German economy is recovering hesitantly from the sharp post-unification boom and recession.
