  • The Transition from Hunting–Gathering to Food Production in the Gamo Highlands of Southern Ethiopia

    Open Access•James Arthur, Matthew C Curtis et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2019•Citada por: 11•Referências: 79

Over three field seasons between 2007 and 2012, we excavated three caves—Mota, Tuwatey, and Gulo—situated at an average elevation of 2,084 m above sea level in the cool and moist Boreda Gamo Highlands of southwestern Ethiopia. Anthropogenic deposits in these caves date from the Middle to Late Holocene (ca. 6000 to 100 BP) and provide excellent preservation of material culture, fauna, flora, and human skeletal remains from which to investigate cha…

  • The latest Ursus spelaeus in Italy, a new contribution to the extinction chronology of the cave bear

Open Access•Ivan Martini, Mauro Coltorti et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

The skeleton of a young prime adult cave bear, Ursus spelaeus , was found in Chiostraccio Cave (Siena, Tuscany, central Italy), only slightly buried under rock falls. The specimen was dated yielding a conventional age of 24,030 ± 100 14 C yr BP (29,200–28,550 cal yr BP), which makes it the latest known representative of the species in Italy. The skeleton was accompanied by the remains of wolf ( Canis lupus ), wild boar ( Sus scrofa ), aurochs ( B…

  • A New Late Paleolithic “Offering Venus” from Frasassi Gorge (Central Italy)

Open Access•Mauro Coltorti, Cristina Lemorini et al.•ARTICLE•Palethnologie•2013

We present a new find coming from a cave in the Frasassi Gorge, (Marche, central Italy). The Venus was discovered by one of us (SP) at the base of a local man‐made scarp at the entrance of the cave. Although it was not found in situ, the simple stratigraphical setting of the nearby sequence and the fact that in the past there was an archaeological layer, later destroyed, allow us to establish that layer 3 is the best candidate for the provenience…

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. Small scale geomorphological maps and land unit classification of large areas are not common due to the high degree of generalisation required to represent landforms originally mapped at larger scale (i.e. 1:10,000). Here we present a 1:200,000 scale geomorphological map of the Siena Province (Tuscany, Italy) where the landforms related to different processes have been synthesise…
