  • Archaeology, chronology, and sedimentological context of the youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage from Jebel Faya, United Arab Emirates

    Open Access•Knut Bretzke, Frank Preusser et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 57

Due to the scarcity of stratified and well-dated archaeological horizons, diachronic as well as spatial patterns of Pleistocene lithic traditions are not very well understood in Arabia. To contribute to this topic, we present new archaeological, sedimentological and chronological data from archaeological horizon II (AH II), the stratigraphically youngest Middle Palaeolithic assemblage at Jebel Faya, Emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. Resul…

  • A note on the trident mark, stone worship and cult practices in Southeast Arabia

Open Access•Bruno Overlaet, Sabah Jasim et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2024•Referências: 3

The worship of baetyls in antiquity is well documented in the Near East and the Mediterranean, archaeologically as well as historically. While such practices were also common in South‐East Arabia, the archaeological information on it is still very limited. A boulder carved with a ‘trident’ (a mark familiar from local Abiel coin issues), which came to light at the site of Mleiha, has a circular cavity on the side similar to those visible on stones…

  • Kalba

Open Access•Christoph Schwall, Maria Brandl et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Referências: 4

This project investigates the prehistoric coastal site of Kalba on the Gulf of Oman in the context of exchange networks between maritime waterways and land-based caravan routes on the south-eastern Arabian Peninsula. In addition to favourable environmental conditions, raw-material procurement strategies were important for the economy of this multi-crafting community

  • Luminescence chronology of fluvial and aeolian deposits from the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE

Open Access•Daniela Mueller, Kira Raith et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2023

Quaternary environments on the Arabian Peninsula shifted between pronounced arid conditions and phases of increased rainfall, which had a profound impact on Earth surface processes. However, while aeolian sediment dynamics are reasonably well understood, there is a lack of knowledge with regard to variability in the fluvial systems. Presented here are the findings from several locations within wadi drainage systems to the west of the Hajar Mounta…

  • Heirloom cylinder seals at Mleiha (Sharjah Emirate, UAE)

Open Access•Bruno Overlaet, Sabah Jasim et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2023•Referências: 9

Very few cylinder seals are reported from South‐East Arabia. This paper reports on two cylinder seals that were found as heirlooms at Mleiha, UAE. The first is a Neo‐Assyrian seal with a ritual scene: kneeling worshippers around a tree of life. The second is a seal of local manufacture. The positioning of its image, a human figure holding an Arabian horned viper, is turned 90°, questioning whether it was ever used as a seal or rather worn as an a…

  • On the diversity of the Palaeolithic record and patterns of Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental conditions in Southeast Arabia

Open Access•Knut Bretzke, Eisa Yousif et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2020•Citada por: 4•Referências: 57

The Late Pleistocene occupation of Southeast Arabia is well documented in the sequence recorded at Jebel Faya, Emirate of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates). Here the archaeological record suggests pulses of occupation in the region between ~125,000 and 10,000 years ago. The large chronological gaps observed between settlement phases are thought to indicate long periods of severe climatic conditions during the Late Pleistocene preventing human occupa…

  • Filling in the gap – The Acheulean site Suhailah 1 from the central region of the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE

  • Buried far from home

Open Access•Adelina Kutterer, Sabah Jasim et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2015•Citada por: 3•Referências: 14

Human skeletons were recovered in two unmarked burials blown to the surface of a dune south‐west of Jebel al‐Emeilah in the Central Region of the Sharjah Emirate ( UAE ). Sasanian stamp seals were found associated with one of the individuals. A bone fragment of this individual provided a direct radiocarbon date placing it in the Middle Sasanian period. With the aid of strontium isotope analysis it was possible to determine that the two individual…

  • Dibba

    Open Access•Sabah Jasim, Eisa Yousif•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2014•Citada por: 6•Referências: 10

In this paper recent archaeological evidence from the port city of Dibba in the United Arab Emirates is presented. Finds of both ceramics and elite objects detail the extensive maritime trade network that connected this part of Arabia with the broader Indian Ocean World

  • Rhodian amphora stamps found in Mleiha (Sharjah, UAE)

Open Access•Patrick Monsieur, Bruno Overlaet et al.•ARTICLE•Arabian archaeology and epigraphy•2013•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

To date Mleiha has yielded eighteen stamps belonging to Rhodian wine amphorae. Eleven of these can be dated to the second half of the third and the first half of the second centuries BC. Rhodian stamps are vital for the chronological framework of the PIR-A period at Mleiha. Most of them, if not all, belonged to funerary contexts but were unfortunately rarely found in undisturbed contexts. The stamp types of the eponym Ἀριστεύς and of the fabrican…
