  • Representing the Great in Music

    Meilin Chinn•ARTICLE•Philosophy East and West•2021

Many discussions of musical meaning are structured by a pivotal disagreement over whether music is a representational art. Some argue that music should be understood in formal terms because it cannot represent anything external to it, while others resist the austerity of formalism with explanations of how music represents the extramusical world via its relationship to another source of established meaning. Across the divide, these approaches shar…

  • Race Magic and the Yellow Peril

    Open Access•Meilin Chinn•ARTICLE•Journal of Aesthetics and Art…•2019

Among the many historical examples in which the Orient has been imaginatively associated with magic, one of the most fascinating involves an actual overlap between race and magic in the popular performances of yellowface magicians at the turn of the twentieth century. I use this example to show and analyze some of the dynamics between magic and the aesthetics of race, especially as these play out through one of the most influential and long‐stand…

  • The New Fama Puzzle

Matthieu Bussière, Meilin Chinn et al.•REPORT•National Bureau of Economic…•2018

We re-examine the historically common finding that ex post depreciation and the forward premium are negatively correlated, termed the forward premium puzzle. When covered interest differentials are zero, this finding is equivalent to the rejection of the joint hypothesis of uncovered interest parity (UIP) and full information rational expectations. We term this result the Fama puzzle (1984), given the difficulty in identifying a time-varying risk…

  • A Faith-Based Initiative Meets the Evidence

Meilin Chinn, Menzie D Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2013

It is often asserted that a flexible exchange rate regime would facilitate current account adjustment. Using data on over 170 countries over the 1971–2005 period, we examine this assertion systematically. We find no strong, robust, or monotonic relationship between exchange rate regime flexibility and the rate of current account reversion, even after accounting for the degree of economic development and trade and capital account openness. This fi…

  • A New Measure of Financial Openness

Meilin Chinn, Menzie D Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Policy…•2008•Citada por: 138•Referências: 2

We create a new index that measures the extent of openness in capital account transactions. Despite the abundance of literature and policy analyses regarding the effect of financial liberalization, the debate is far from settled. One of the reasons for that outcome is the lack of proper ways of measuring the extent of the openness in cross-border financial transactions. We seek to remedy this deficiency by creating an index aimed at measuring the…

  • The determinants of the global digital divide

    Meilin Chinn, M D Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Economic Papers•2006

To identify the determinants of cross-country disparities in personal computer and internet penetration, we examine a panel of 161 countries over the 1999–2001 period. Our candidate variables include economic variables (income per capita , years of schooling, illiteracy, trade openness), demographic variables (youth and aged dependency ratios, urbanization rate), infrastructure indicators (telephone density, electricity consumption), telecommunic…

  • What matters for financial development? Capital controls, institutions, and interactions

  • A Decomposition of Global Linkages in Financial Markets Over Time

Kristin J Forbes, Meilin Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2004

This paper tests if real and financial linkages between countries can explain why movements in the world's largest markets often have such large effects on other financial markets, and how these cross-market linkages have changed over time. It estimates a factor model in which a country's market returns are determined by global, sectoral, and cross-country factors (returns in large financial markets) and by country-specific effects. Then it uses …

  • International monetary arrangements in the Asia‐Pacific region

Meilin Chinn, Menzie David Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•The Pacific Review•1999•Referências: 5

This paper first examines the literature on speculative attacks on fixed and managed exchange rate regimes, and discusses these models in the context of the recent turmoil in Asia‐Pacific currencies. Since these speculative attacks are more likely to be successful when financial markets are well integrated, it then assesses the degree of financial market integration in the region. Then the behavior of the exchange rate is examined. A model for a …

  • Further Investigation of the Uncertain Unit Root in GNP

Yin‐Wong Cheung, Yin-Wong Cheung et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1997

A more powerful version of the augmented Dickey–Fuller test and a test that has trend stationarity as the null are applied to U.S. gross national product. Simulated critical values generated from plausible trend- and difference-stationary models are used to minimize possible finite-sample biases. The discriminatory power of the two tests is evaluated using alternative-specific rejection frequencies. For postwar quarterly data, these two tests do …

  • How well is the United States competing? A comment on Papadakis

Open Access•Louis D Johnston, Meilin Chinn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•1996•Referências: 6

We contend that Papadakis's inferences regarding past and future competitiveness crises cannot be made on the basis of the evidence she has presented. We support this assertion in three ways. First, we argue that the import penetration ratio is not a reasonable measure of national competitiveness in international markets. Second, we show that conventional macroeconomic models can explain the deterioration in the trade balance during the 1980s. Th…

  • Beware of Econometricians Bearing Estimates

Meilin Chinn, Menzie David Chinn•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•1991•Citada por: 5•Referências: 3

Current statistical approaches to modeling many economic relationships are grounded in traditional ideas of deterministic trends. Some of the failures of these approaches are due to inappropriate models using time series with “unit roots.” After a shock, unit root processes do not revert to some time trend, but rather can drift up or down without bounds. A “random walk” is a well-known example of a unit root process. The purpose of this paper is …
