Fragile Legacies
In the past thirty years, research and writings about the oeuvre and practice of professional African photographers have gained momentum. Today these luminaries, among them Jonathan Adagogo Green, Seydou Keita, and J.D. ‘Okhei Ojeikere, take their place in the global history of photography. Exhibitions devoted to the practice of African image makers have multiplied in recent years, reflecting the increased interest in their photographs, which als…
From Context to Text
It is evident that, as the study of photography in Africa opens up, many other fascinating topics will emerge. Photographs by Africans, of Africans, and of African arts in and out of context will come to receive the fuller attention they deserve (Cole and Ross 1985a:28).In the late nineteenth and throughout the twentieth centuries, the repositioning of photographs as art rather than as documents relying on mechanical reproduction coincided with t…

The Incidental Photographer

Photographing in the Cameroon Grassfields, 1970 to 1984

The first time I presented a paper on old postcards and someone came up afterward to mention his own collection, I was surprised. Now I expect it. Most of us who admit to collecting cards from Chad, Nigeria, C6te d'Ivoire, or wherever, have probably never given these pictures of colonial detritus a second thought. The products of mass, popular culture, they are considered by mainstream art historians as degraded versions of high art photography. …

Photographs as Materials for African History
In recent years there has been a growing interest in source materials on African history in African and European archives. The registration of documents and the methodology used in their interpretation have become a major issue of many scholars. While much progress has been made concerning the written materials, another category of archival documents has received little attention. These are pictorial records in general and historical photographs …

Impressions of the African past
This paper applies two modes of interpretation to ethnographic photographs taken between 1884 and 1915 in the then German colony Cameroon (West Africa). The pictures are discussed in light of the recent anthropological debate on constructing knowledge about the Other, be it in written or pictorial form, that perpetuates and reinforces conventional stereotypes. The maker and his or her preconceptions are the main focus of this type of research. Th…

On the Savannah”
Several photographs taken by German and other European photographers in Cameroon during the German colonial period (1884–1915) became very popular with the German public. One of these images shows King Njoya, the ruler of the Bamum kingdom, on his famous beaded two-figure throne during an audience in late December 1911 or early January 1912 (fig. 1). He receives one of his barefooted subjects, who assumes the typical Bamum pose of reverence and a…
