End-of-life decision-making
Physician-assisted dying (PAD) has been legal in the Netherlands since 2002. We examined public knowledge of PAD regulation and views on self-determination at the end of life. A cross-sectional survey among citizens aged ≥16 (N = 1,456) included 10 knowledge items and 18 statements on termination of life on request. Knowledge scores were calculated; exploratory factor analysis and linear regressions examined underlying constructs and associations…

What About Us? Experiences of Relatives Regarding Physician-Assisted Death for Patients Suffering from Mental Illness

We aim to understand the views of patients with mental illness and wish to die with regard to the possibility of PAD in …

Do Doctors Differentiate Between Suicide and Physician-Assisted Death? A Qualitative Study into the Views of Psychiatrists and General Practitioners
Physician-assisted death for patients suffering from psychiatric disorders is allowed in the Netherlands under certain circumstances. One of the central problems that arise with regard to this practice is the question of whether it is possible to distinguish between suicidality and a request for physician-assisted death. We set up this study to gain insight into how psychiatrists and general practitioners distinguish between suicidality and physi…
Parents’ Perspectives on Decisions to Participate in Pediatric Clinical Research
Knowing why parents decide to consent or dissent to participation of their child in pediatric clinical research is essential to further the ethical debate concerning pediatric research. We performed this qualitative focus group study with 16 parents from the Dutch general public to explore their perspectives on decisions to participate in pediatric clinical research. Group discussion revealed the following: Parents conflate clinical research and …

Doctors as judges
Smokers, drinkers, animal fat eaters, the inactive and the obese, they are all blamed for their potential ill health by doctors, society and their families, in western societies victim blaming is a widespread phenomenon. Doctors are encouraged or even put under pressure to judge behaviour as a tool to allocate and ration medical procedures, by governments or insurance companies that want to keep the healthcare expenditure within strict limits. In…
