Growth as a Measure of the Nutritional and Hygienic Status of a Population
The history of the use of children’s growth as a measure of the nutrition and hygiene of a population since the early 19th century is outlined. Secular trends towards greater height and earlier maturity are reported; the increase in adult height in British men born between 1900 and 1946 averaged about 1.25 cm/decade and in those born between 1946 and 1960 0.6 cm/decade, according to the data of Kuh et al. [Int J Epidemiol 1991;20:1001-1009]. Soci…
Retrospective the Growth and Development of the Annals of Human Biology
The history of the founding in 1958 of the Society for the Study of Human Biology is outlined, and the circumstances in which the Annals of Human Biology began publication in 1974. The contents of the papers published 1974-1997 are reviewed; about 40% concern Population Biology, 40% Auxology and 20% Population Physiology. Some outstanding contributions in the first two of these fields are mentioned. Many consist of groups of papers from an ongoin…

The growth of boys in the Stuttgart Carlschule, 1771–93
Height measurements taken in a mixed longitudinal manner on 1084 German-born boys aged 7 to 21+ at the Carlschule Academy in Stuttgart during the period 1771-93 have been examined. The boys can be divided into upper (aristocrat), middle and lower (artisan, servant) classes, nearly all housed and fed in this boarding school. Preece-Baines curves have been fitted to a subsample of 155 boys whose measurements cover at least the period 12-16 years at…
Pubertal growth spurt in the female rhesus monkey
Three‐monthly measurements of tibia length, crown‐rump length (CRL), and body wieght have been made on nine indoor‐housed and six outdoor‐housed female rhesus monkeys ( Macaca mulatta ) from ages 17 to 41 months. In the indoor‐housed there were clear pubertal growth spurts, identifiable in individual curves, with average peaks at 22.5 months for tibia length, 23.5 months for CRL, and 24.5 for weight. Menarche occurred on average at 26.0 months. I…
The first study of human growth
The circumstances surrounding the first study of human growth, published in 1754, are described. Jampert, who made this study, died young and his work was not recognised, indeed remained completely unknown between 1778 and 1981. The content of the work is briefly described

The present S.I.R. database contains seven British and one Indian study. The Archive is open to receive other contributions if researchers wish
Assessment of Skeletal Maturity and Prediction of Adult Height (TW2 Method)
Clinical longitudinal standards for height and height velocity for North American children
Increase in length of leg relative to trunk in Japanese children and adults from 1957 to 1977
The secular trends in height, sitting height and leg length in Japanese children have been studied by fitting Preece-Baines Model I curves to the annual mean values from ages five to 17 of school data collected in 1957, 1967 and 1977. The method provides estimates of final adult value, and of age of maximum annual increment. Between 1957 and 1977 the maximal increments in height, sitting height and leg length all became earlier, by about a year i…
A longitudinal analysis of the growth of limb segments in adolescence
The growth of upper and lower-limb segments of 96 adolescent boys and girls from the Royal Hospital School Longitudinal Study was analysed. Preece-Baines Model 1 curves were fitted to the longitudinal data to obtain, for each measurement, age at peak velocity and the magnitude of this velocity. Mean-constant peak velocities were between 1-0 and 2-5 cm/yr in all segments. They were in all cases greater than the values obtained from fitting the P-B…
Degree of resemblance of the pattern of growth among sibs in families of West Bengal (India)
The Preece-Baines Model 1 curve has been fitted to longitudinal data on growth in height of 105 boys and girls in 70 Bengal families: 60 of these were sibs distributed in 25 families. For a number of growth characteristics, such as age at peak height velocity, the proportion of the total population variance that was due to variation between, as opposed to within, families was estimated by Smith's (1980) method. The proportions for age at take-off…

Radiographically determined widths of bone muscle and fat in the upper arm and calf from age 3–18 years
In the Harpenden Growth Study arm and calf radiographs were taken on 280 boys and 225 girls twice a year over varying periods. Widths of bone, muscle and fat halfway down the arm and at maximum calf diameter were measured, with widths of bone cortex and medulla where possible. Mean distance and velocity curves are given for chronological age 3-18 years together with curves based on time from peak-height velocity (PHV) and time from peak muscle ve…
A longitudinal study of the growth in height of boys and girls of West Bengal (India) aged six months to 20 years
This study is the first Indian longitudinal growth survey from early childhood to maturity. The heights of 303 boys and 260 girls, from middle-class families in a semi-urban area south of Calcutta, were measured at regular intervals over periods of up to 14 years (between 1952 and 1966). The data were analysed using appropriate mixed longitudinal and curve-fitting techniques. Growth in height of these middle-class Bengali children, who are not a …
Prediction of adult Sheldon somatotypes I and II from ratings and measurements at childhood ages
The photographs of 82 boys from the Harpenden Growth Study were assigned somatotype ratings at ages 5, 8, 11, 14, and 18 years, using both Sheldon's earlier, anthroposcopic method and his revised, objective method (somatotype II). Inter-judge correlations for the anthroposcopic ratings of the 18-year-olds ranged from 0.79 to 0.93 for the three components; correlations for the somatotype II ratings ranged from 0.94 to 0.99. The three components of…
Investigation of the mid-growth spurt in height, weight and limb circumferences in single-year velocity data from the London 1966–67 growth survey
In the 1966-67 London County Council Survey, some 10 000 children were measured twice, on occasions one year apart. Mean single-year velocities were calculated for each successive 6-month period from age centre 5 1/2 to maturity, for height, weight, upper arm and calf circumferences and triceps and subscapular skinfolds. The velocity curves, in which successive points are independently ascertained, were examined for evidence of a mid-growth spurt…

Clinical longitudinal standards for height, weight, height velocity, weight velocity, and stages of puberty.
New charts for height, weight, height velocity, and weight velocity are presented for clinical (as opposed to population survey) use. They are based on longitudinal-type growth curves, using the same data as in the British 1965 growth standards. In the velocity standards centiles are given for children who are early- and late-maturing as well as for those who mature at the average age (thus extending the use of the previous charts). Limits of nor…
The adolescent growth spurt of boys and girls of the Harpenden Growth Study
Logistic curves have been fitted to the growth during puberty of the 55 boys and 35 girls of the Harpenden Growth Study who were measured every three months during puberty and thereafter until growth ceased. Very good fits were obtained for stature, sitting height, subischial leg length, biacromial and bi-iliac diameters from approximately six months after the beginning of the adolescent spurt. This beginning, called "take-off", was determined gr…
The 1972 Cuban national child growth study as an example of population health monitoring
A stratified 3-stage random sample of 50 360 children ages 0-19 drawn from the whole population of Cuba was measured in a large-scale growth study during 1972-73. Fifteen anthropometric measurements were taken and puberty stages and menarche status were assessed. Hand-wrist radiographs were done on 10% of the sample. Information regarding the social and education status of the parents was obtained and parental heights were measured. One year late…
Diurnal variation in stature and sitting height in 12–14-year-old boys
1. Measurements of stature and sitting height were made at 0930 and 1400 h on 19 boys aged 12-14 years with the "stretching upward" technique. 11 different boys were similarly measured at 1000 and 1700 h. 2. The average decrease in stature from 0930 to 1400 h was 2.0 mm and from 1000 to 1700 h was 4.6 mm. The corresponding values for sitting height were 2.0 mm and 2.8 mm. 3. No strong evidence for individual differences in diurnal change was foun…

Standards from birth to maturity for height, weight, height velocity, and weight velocity
Standards: Chronological Age-based and Individual Type We now consider how to construct velocity standards, to answer our second question 'Has this child's rate of growth been within normal limits ?' We are again confronted with the alternatives of plotting against chronological or developmental age at adolescence and we have adopted the same solution as before. First we give, in the conven- tional manner, centiles plotted against chrono- logical…

Human Biology. An Introduction to Human Evolution, Variation and Growth
"A critical notice of Brown on "the age at menarche
The Age at Menarche" (Brit.J. prev.soc.Med., 20, 9-14, 1966) and on the meaning of the word biology are un- conventional, but at least they are his own.His opinions of what I believe, and his reports of what I have written, are so erroneous that in the interest of your readers they demand correction.Writing of the causes of the trend towards earlier menarche, Brown says: "Tanner . . .discounts explanations which rely on ordinary environmental age…

Variations in the Pattern of Pubertal Changes in Boys
Mixed longitudinal data on the physical changes at puberty in 228 normal boys are presented together with normal standards for stages of genital and pubic hair development. The genitalia began to develop between the ages 91⁄2 years and 131⁄2 years in 95% of boys (mean = 11.6 ± 0.09) and reached maturity at ages varying between 13 and 17 (mean = 14.9 ± 1.10). The age at which pubic hair first appeared was not accurately determined, but its develop…
