Present at the Creation
In 1967, the year SHAFR was founded, the Vietnam War was at its height and courses in American foreign relations were full and expanding. The same had been true at Whittier College in 1956, when the Russians launched Sputnik. By 1958, student and community interest had grown so great that in addition to American foreign relations, I introduced a course in Soviet-American relations. From 1961 to 1968, I was teaching at California State University–…
Between War and Peace
Between War and Peace is an examination of America's role in Siberia in the midst of World War I and the Russian revolution and civil war. Professor Carol Willcox Melton has provided a fascinating and graphic study of a military expedition that was one of the strangest in American history, yet one that provided a model for a policy still in use in the twenty-first century. The United States decision to enter the war came at a time when the three-…

American Views of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and the Pakistan Liberation Movement
14 August 1947 is a date of deep historic significance to the peoples of the Indian subcontinent. On that day the two great states of India and Pakistan achieved independence and became dominions of the British Commonwealth of Nations. In the rise of both nations, as is characteristic of most national movements, there were three principal ingredients: a community possessing distinctive characteristics, a particular set of circumstances under whic…

The Arrest of Alice Masaryk
Historians are generally agreed that during the first two years of World War I American feeling against Germany was far stronger and more intense than against Austria-Hungary. While relations between the Germanic and American peoples had not been truly friendly since the 1880s, attitudes in the United States toward Austria-Hungary were much less antagonistic. Historically there had been little direct contact between the latter two countries. It s…
