Neural Networks and Multivariate Analysis Based on Geochemical Data to Determine Stone Provenance From Ancient Calabrian Quarries (Southern Italy)
This study shows an innovative approach to determine the origin of some Calabrian rocks quarried used in ancient times. Twenty‐five quarries, distributed in all the Calabrian provinces (Southern Italy), were studied and sampled. Ten samples were taken from each quarry, for a total of 250 samples. The rocks, of sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic type, were characterized by X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD) a…
Earthen modeling in the depths of the Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca, Mexico
This paper addresses the mineralogical and chemical composition of earth pastes used in the production of selected unfired clay reliefs and sculptures modeled within a cave in today's Mixe (Ayuuk ja'ay) territory of Oaxaca, Mexico, through a multi-technical approach comprising Optical microscopy (OM), Portable X fluorescence spectrometry (p-XRF), Energy Dispersion Microanalysis by Electron Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA), UV-fluorescence microscopy, …
The modeling pastes of the monumental terracruda sculpture of the Silk Roads
This paper presents the results of the mineralogical, petrographic and chemical study of different archaeological samples related to terracruda sculptures and other elements that were part of the architectural decoration of the Buddhist sites of Tepe Narenj and Qol‐e‐tut (Kabul, Afghanistan; fifth to 11th centuries CE). The main objective of the study was to characterize the samples using an archaeometric approach. The study helped to better unde…
Volcanic Pozzolan from the Phlegraean Fields in the Structural Mortars of the Roman Temple of Nora (Sardinia)
In this paper, we discuss the presence of volcanic pozzolans in the structural mortars of the Roman Temple of Nora in Sardinia (3rd c. AD), represented by pyroclastic rocks (pumices and tuffs) employed as coarse and fine aggregates. The provenance of these materials from the Phlegraean Fields was highlighted through a multi-analytical approach, involving Polarized Light Microscopy on thin sections (PLM), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy D…
Phoenician–Punic amphorae in northern coastal Etruria
This study outlines the circulation of Phoenician–Punic amphorae in northern coastal Etruria, with a particular focus on Pisa (Italy), where their presence has been attested since the mid‐eighth century BCE. A set of specimens from Piazza del Duomo was analysed by minero‐petrographic and geochemical techniques. The results were compared with literature data from Mediterranean production areas. The research allowed a better definition of the role …
Hydraulicity of lime plasters from Teotihuacan, Mexico
Archaeometric approach to identifying the provenance of white marbles from the shipwreck of Cala Cicala (Crotone, Calabria, Italy)
The bricks of Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey)
Identifying a technological style in the making of lime plasters at Teopancazco (Teotihuacan, México)
Combining residue analysis of floors and ceramics for the study of activity areas at the Garum Shop at Pompeii
New compositional data on ancient mortars from Hagia Sophia (Istanbul, Turkey)
Compositional study of mortars and pigments from the "Mosaico della Sala dei Draghi e dei Delfini" in the archaeological site of Kaulonía (Southern Calabria, Magna Graecia, Italy)
Archaeometric Study of Mortars from the Garum Shop at Pompeii, Campania, Italy
This paper presents the results of the compositional study of 29 samples of mortar from the so‐called “Garum Shop” (I, 12, 8) at Pompeii in Southern Italy. The characterization of the samples yielded information on the raw materials used in the mixtures, the production technology of mortars, and the building phases. It was carried out through polarized optical microscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, X‐ray fluorescence, microanalysis energy‐dispersi…
Plasters from Different Buildings of the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City)
In this work, we present the results of the characterization of 20 lime plaster samples taken from the Sacred Precinct of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), the ancient capital of the Aztec empire. The samples come from different buildings of this precinct (A, B and D) and from the west façade of phase VI of the Templo Mayor pyramid. The objective of the work is to characterize the plaster samples, to understand the raw materials used, and to evaluate t…
