Covid-19 Pandemic, Volunteering, and Well-Being
The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated containment measures presented significant challenges in personal and social spheres, prompting the reorganization of prosocial activities. Despite the recognized buffering function of volunteering on well-being of older adults, it remains uncertain whether this function was maintained during the pandemic. Drawing on the framework of weak ties, this study investigates how starting, continuing, and stopping…
Time to Volunteer
Volunteers’ time contributions have decreased in some European societies, and researchers have sought to understand why. This study aims to uncover the relationship between work-family life changes and changes in individual voluntary behaviour with volunteers’ time contributions. To analyse how determinants for volunteer time contributions have changed over time, we draw on cross-sectional data from the German Survey on Volunteering. We apply Poi…

Digitalisation, Gender, and Training of Employees in the Second Half of Working Life in Germany (Online Appendix)
Digitalisation places new demands on employees working in changing occupations. To undertake the adaptation to new requirements further training is one central strategy of updating and building new skills – especially for older employees. Digitalisation in the world of work has been shown to affect male and female employees differently. However, little is known about the interrelationship between digitalisation in occupations and training. This g…

Monitoring Civil Society. The German Survey on Volunteering 1999-2019

Stadt, Land, freiwilliges Engagement
Freiwilliges Engagement in Deutschland
Digitalisation and Employees' Subjective Job Quality in the Second Half of Working Life in Germany
Since digitalisation alters occupational task profiles via automation processes, job quality is also likely to be affected. While existing literature mainly focusses on objective job quality, this study asks if and how digitalisation is associated with employees' subjective job quality in the second half of working life in Germany. Analyses are based on the German Ageing Survey 2014. Our sample includes n = 1541 employees aged 40-65 years who are…
Social Justice Beliefs Regarding Old-Age Provisions in Germany
Cohort Profile
Population ageing and longevity - as observed in Germany - is not simply a phenomenon of an increasing number of old people: it also involves a range of qualitative and structural changes affecting older people. For this reason the German Federal Government, aiming to improve the quality of its monitoring efforts on older people in Germany, launched the German Ageing Survey (DEAS) in the mid 1990s, under the auspices of the Federal Ministry for F…

Is Part-Time Employment after Childbirth a Stepping-Stone into Full-Time Work? A Cohort Study for East and West Germany
Does part-time work support first-time mothers’ employment by providing a stepping-stone into full-time work in Germany? Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel from 1984–2012, this study compares three different age cohorts of first-time East and West German mothers to investigate whether there has been any convergence between East and West Germany in the way women use part-time employment. Results show that mothers in West Germany in al…
Separate paths, same direction? De-standardization of male employment biographies in East and West Germany
Until the mid-1980s, labour markets in Germany were characterized by a high level of employment stability. Employment biographies of men were dominated by full-time employment in both East and West Germany and were hence quite similar in this respect, despite the two regions' enormously different institutional settings. Since that time however, important changes have occurred. Labour markets have become more flexible, as have employment biographi…
