Does Nonresidential Fathers' Problem Drinking and Hostile Parenting Predict Adolescent Delinquency
Nonresidential fathers are often overlooked in parenting research. The present study aims to bridge this gap by examining whether heavy paternal drinking, paternal physical assault and psychological aggression, and parenting stress reported by nonresidential fathers during preadolescence predicts delinquency across the transition to adolescence. Data from nonresidential fathers and their children were utilized from waves 5 and 6 of the Future of …
Thwarted Belonging and Perceived Burdensomeness During Middle and Older Adulthood
Using a sample of middle-aged and older adults, this research explores associations between generativity and two key risk factors for suicide: thwarted belonging (T.B.) and perceived burdensomeness (P.B.). These variables are typically studied as predictors of suicide; the current study is unique in examining their psychosocial correlates. Erikson described, generativity as a psychosocial construct that characterizes adult well-being in mid-life,…

Parental regulation of online behavior and cyber aggression
The present study examines adolescents’ experiences with, and perspectives about, parental regulation of internet-based peer socialization including cyber aggression. Adolescents (N = 110) were surveyed about technology use, electronic device ownership, and the extent to which parents place restrictions on, and/or monitor, their cyber behavior. Adolescents were also asked about their experiences with parental regulation of cyber aggression, and t…
Educational aspiration–expectation discrepancies
This study examines whether disconnection between educational aspirations and expectations is associated with socioeconomic status, academic performance, academic risk‐related behaviors and related psychosocial factors in an ethnically and economically diverse sample of early adolescents from a public middle school ( N = 761). Results suggest that students who aspire to achieve more than they expect to achieve also are likely to have more economi…
Relational aggression in young adults' friendships and romantic relationships
This study examines young adults' experiences with relational aggression among friends and romantic partners. Relationship exclusivity and normative beliefs about relati…

Social‐cognitive mediators of the relation of environmental and emotion regulation factors to children's aggression

An ethnically diverse sample of 778 children (57% girls) in grades 4–6 from both urban and suburban schools participated. Measures included exposure to aggression (seeing/hearing about aggression, victimization), emotion regulation (impulsivity, anger control), so…
