This exemplary monograph is divided into three parts. The first (p. 37-130) concerns the situation of the Russian Orthodox church (ROC) as a whole from late Stalinism, through Khrushchev’s antireligious campaign, to the normalization of the early Brezhnev era. The second (p. 131-250) narrows the focus to the ROC’s Ukrainian exarchate; and the third (p. 251-382) narrows it even more, to the formerly Greek Catholic, as of 1946 “reunified” church – …

This study examines three actors in the Lviv pogrom of 1 July 1941: the Germans, Ukrainian nationalists, and the urban crowd. It argues that the Germans created the conditions for the outbreak of the pogrom and encouraged it in the first place. They also shot Jews en masse, both during and after the pogrom. The Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) set up a short-lived government in Lviv on 30 June headed by a vehement anti-Semite. • Obstacles to the Integration of the Holocaust into Post-Communist East European Historical Narratives

    John-Paul Himka, John‐paul Himka•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2008•Citada por: 6

Factors that have made it difficult for post-communist East European societies to integrate the Holocaust into their historical cultures include the communist heritage, which downplayed the specifically Jewish Holocaust; sensitivity to charges that a nation was complicit in the murder of the Jews; the framing of East European histories as national narratives into which it is difficult to incorporate the experience of other nations; the feeling th…

    Open Access•John-Paul Himka, John‐paul Himka•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•1994•Referências: 4

The concept of “Western Ukraine” is not entirely a static one. As a valid unit of historical analysis it first appears in the late eighteenth century, when the Habsburg monarchy added Galicia (1772) and Bukovina (occupied 1774, annexed 1787) to its collection of territories; already part of the collection was the Ukrainian-inhabited region of Transcarpathia (depending on how one counts, it had been Habsburg since as early as 1526 or as late as th…

Recent developments in Ukraine have continued to underscore the persistent importance of regionalism in that country. The west of Ukraine still exhibits political complexion unmistakably distinguishable from the norm in the republic. Although all regions of Ukraine voted in favour of national independence in the referendum of 1 December 1991, the percentage voting yes was highest in the west. In the western oblasts of Ivano-Frankivsk and Ternopil…
