Epistemic and evidential marking in discourse
The use of evidential and epistemic marking as a rhetorical strategy has received little attention in the literature. Speakers often make judgments on the basis of perceptual, reported, or inferred evidence, thus the relationship between epistemicity and evidentiality is often close and difficult to demarcate. However, whereas epistemicity involves the speaker's or writer's evaluation, judgment and degree of commitment attached to the truth-value…
Communicating Epistemic Stance
This study investigates how epistemic stance is encoded and perceived in face-to-face communication when language is regarded as comprised by speech and gesture. Two studies were conducted with this goal in mind. The first study consisted of a production task in which participants performed opinion reports. Results showed that speakers communicate epistemic stance both verbally and non-verbally, and that specific prosodic and gestural patterns ar…
From truth-attesting to intensification
The aim of this article is to discuss and illustrate the grammaticalization process and the polysemic and polyfunctional nature of the Spanish and Catalan markers la verdad and la veritat, from an original objectified referential meaning of the forms (‘tell the truth’, opposite to ‘tell a lie’) to a highly subjectified procedural meaning of the markers (figuratively/metaphorically: ‘frankly/sincerely/honestly’). The pragmatic meaning of these mar…
Evidentiality, intersubjectivity and salience in Spanish and Catalan markers claro/clar and la verdad/veritat
From an interactional perspective, this paper explores the evidential and salient meanings of Spanish and Catalan pragmatic markers claro/clar and la verdad/veritat, focusing on their intersubjective nature. Salience is the prominence that speakers give to certain meanings of lexemes based on prior experience, familiarity or convention (Giora, 2003; Kecskes 2013). Intersubjectivity involves the sharing of responsibility and commitment to the vali…

An approach to Catalan evidentiality
Evidential expressions are generally treated in the literature as a type of epistemic modality. The speaker estimates the chances that an utterance has of being true and expresses his / her strength of commitment to the truth of the proposition expressed. Strictly speaking, the evidential marking involves the speaker’s or writer’s stance in relation to the source-of-information, whereas epistemic modals express the speaker’s or writer’s attitude …
Pragmatic markers and discourse coherence relations in English and Catalan oral narrative
This article explores the role that markers play in the pragmatic discourse structure of Catalan and English oral narratives. It is argued that their meaning is directly related to the sort of coherence relation that they establish with preceding and following propositions and discourse segments, centring the discussion on four discourse structures/components: ideational, rhetorical, sequential and inferential. The aim is to show the textual form…
Atención y relato
El relato como modelo de construcción cognitiva que se desarrolla a lo largo de un eje temporal ha sido utilizado ampliamente por lingüistas funcionales y cognitivistas, narratólogos y estudiosos del procesamiento del discurso, en general. Los hechos conforman el esqueleto de una narración, pero la forma en que éstos se organizan, combinados con la orientación espaciotemporal, su descripción y su evaluación resulta en una percepción e interpretac…
