  • The illusion of stable fertility preferences

    M W Muller, 誠 阿部 et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•2022•Citada por: 16•Referências: 69

Fertility preferences have long played a key role in models of fertility differentials and change. We examine the stability of preferences over time using rich panel data on Kenyan women's fertility desires, expectations, actual fertility, and recall of desires in three waves over a nine-year period, when respondents were in their 20s. We find that although desired fertility is quite unstable, most women perceive their desires to be stable. Under…

  • Demographic Transitions and Modernity

    Jennifer Johnson-Hanks, Jennifer Johnson‐hank et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2008•Citada por: 28•Referências: 113

Much contemporary anthropology is concerned with the origin, character, and consequences of late modernity. Surprisingly absent in this literature is the importance of population size, structure, and process. In particular, the demographic transition-or historical change from a high to a low equilibrium of birth and death rates-is an important component of modernity that deserves greater anthropological engagement. This review outlines demographi…

    Open Access•Jennifer Johnson-Hanks, Jennifer Johnson‐hank et al.•ARTICLE•Demographic Research•2007•Citada por: 15•Referências: 40

This paper argues that demographic anthropology has, for most part, imported rather than exported theory. Yet, the discipline has the potential to generate important rethinking of population, culture, and their interaction. After discussing the state o

  • On the Politics and Practice of Muslim Fertility

    Open Access•Jennifer Johnson-Hanks, Jennifer Johnson‐hank et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology Quarterly•2006•Citada por: 24•Referências: 25

Recent popular works have represented Muslim fertility as dangerously high, both a cause and consequence of religious fundamentalism. This article uses comparative, statistical methods to show that this representation is empirically wrong, at least in West Africa. Although religion strongly inflects reproductive practice, its effects are not constant across different communities. In West African countries with Muslim majorities, Muslim fertility …
