I am uncomfortable with the narrow scope laid out for applied anthropology. I intend to use Eddy and Partridge's introduction to their edited volume Applied Anthropology in America (Columbia 1978) as my point of departure. I do so in a spirit of respect; to take a lesser work would be inappropriate

This essay explores the coexistence of the ancestor cult and the Presbyterian Free Church as constituent elements of the ritual and ideological field of Yombe society in northern Zambia. It takes the position that these two religious expressions may be appropriate to the experiences, consciousness, and actions of individuals as they pursue personal interests and social goals in situations of rapid social change. This paper explores the relationship between formal western style education and developing patterns of social stratification in a community of northern Zambia. It examines the manner in which a capitalist productive mode has affected indigenous occupational structures transforming millet cultivators into peasants and wage earners

Kinship, Friendship, and Exchange in Two Communities
Normative expectations concerning the exchange of goods and services within a community do not necessarily correspond to the observed outcomes of exchange events, and may even contradict them to some degree.
