Rusle erosion modelling reveals good preservation status of the archaeological site of Arslantepe (Malatya, Republic of Türkiye)
Assessing the physical integrity of archaeological sites is vital for heritage conservation management. Using the example of Arslantepe, a prehistoric tell site in south-eastern Türkiye, this article demonstrates the application of RUSLE modelling to estimate surface erosion vulnerability, employing ultra-high-resolution photogrammetry and a field-based geoarchaeological framework. The results reveal contained erosion across the site with localis…
Facing Early Bronze Age climate change in South East Arabia
Studies concerning the human response to changing climate in the arid region of South East Arabia are currently scarce and rarely based on geoarchaeological data. The detailed geoarchaeological study of the sedimentary filling of ditches, channels and wells at the Bronze Age tower site of Salūt-ST1, in central Oman, provides the opportunity to start filling this lacuna. The data, collected with a combination of field observation and thin section …
Mapping Early Holocene to contemporary surface processes and human landscapes west of the lower White Nile (central Sudan)
Holocene geomorphological and pedosedimentary archives of eastern Sahelian paleoenvironments (Kassala, Sudan)
Studies upon past climates, natural landscapes, and environments of archaeologically pivotal regions of northern Africa have been of paramount interest in the past decades. For some of those regions, the human-environmental nexus, intended as the biunivocal mutual agency between people and nature, has been a long-standing research question; yet, for other areas, the environmental record is a still unexplored archive. Here we present case studies …
The geoarchaeological investigation on the defunctionalisation of an Assyrian canals system reveals Late-Holocene land use transitions in Northern Mesopotamia
During the Assyrian rule over Northern Mesopotamia (present-day northern Iraq), complex systems of canals were built to increase the surface of cultivable land and improve the movement of people and goods across the irrigated waterscape of the hinterland of Nineveh and other major urban centres, with the aim of granting socio-economic prosperity to the empire. Nevertheless, supra-regional political instability eventually led to the rapid downfall…
Active surface processes at Mahal Teglinos (Kassala, Eastern Sudan)
Geomorphology and (palaeo-)hydrography of the Southern Atbai plain and western Eritrean Highlands (Eastern Sudan/Western Eritrea)
We present the geomorphology of the Southern Atbai Plain (Eastern Sudan) and the western edge of the Eritrean Highlands (Western Eritrea), in the eastern Sahel. The mountainous area consists of Paleo-Proterozoic gneiss and Neo-Proterozoic igneous rocks and meta-volcanic assemblages shaped as inselbergs and whaleback landforms by weathering. Bare-rock hills emerge from a gentle glacis that oversees the Southern Atbai alluvial plain, located betwee…

Reclaiming the Stage
All performance involves some kind of communication between performer and spectator. After the socialist realist model was established in the mid-1980s, Soviet professional theaters typically relied on conventional input from patrons: attendance, emotional reactions during performances, and applause. Known for its exceptional interaction with audiences, the Taganka Theater decorated its lobby to correspond to a production and even asked spectator…

A Theatre of Their Own
In a society where is at a premium and families wait years for their own apartment, the allocation of physical serves as a powerful means for social and control. In the Soviet Union, this phenomenon affected not only kolkhozniki and other individuals who hoped to attain residency permits in major cities. These policies also hobbled the development of organizations which offered alternative viewpoints to official ideology. In the post-Stalin perio…
