  • Hypersensitivity to noise and light

    Open Access•Marilien C Marzolla, Petra P M Hurks et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2026

Sensory hypersensitivity (SHS) has been associated with mental health problems and difficulties in daily life. To better understand the concept of SHS, we studied the association between sensitivity to noise (NS) and light (LS) in the general population and factors of attention, personality, and mood. We also studied the effect of SHS and related factors on life satisfaction. This cross-sectional observational study included 236 adults who comple…

  • Creative idea forecasting

Kim van Broekhoven, Barbara Belfi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Aesthetics…•2022

History is replete with cases in which people have failed to recognize creative ideas generated by others. In various settings, people are responsible for evaluating ideas generated by others while not being involved in the idea generation process, and thus not exposed to the task. However, little is known on how this lack of task exposure affects creative forecasting. This study therefore examines the effect of task exposure on creative idea eva…

  • When academic achievement (also) reflects personality

Nicolas Hübner, Marion Spengler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Educational Psychology•2022

Students' academic achievement is a key predictor of various life outcomes and is commonly used for selection as well as for educational monitoring and accountability. With regard to achievement indicators, a differentiation has traditionally been drawn between grades and standardized tests. There is initial, albeit inconclusive, evidence that these indicators might differentially reflect students' personality as encapsulated in the Big Five pers…

  • Personality traits, preferences and educational choices

Open Access•Johan Coenen, Lex Borghans et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Psychology•2021•Citada por: 1•Referências: 39

Around the developed world, the need for graduates from Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields is growing. Research on educational and occupational choice has traditionally focused on the cognitive skills of prospective students, and on how these determine the expected costs and benefits of study programs. Little work exists that analyzes the role of personality traits on study choice. This study investigates how personali…

  • The Impact of Occupational Segregation on Occupational Gender Pay Gap in the European Union

    Open Access•Bianca Buligescu, Lex Borghans•ARTICLE•Journal of Community Positive…•2020•Citada por: 1•Referências: 5

The aim of this paper is to analyse the relationship between wages and the fraction of women in an occupation, using variation in the female participation in occupations across European countries. Using data from the European Structure of Earnings Survey 2006 with information about the wages in 93 occupations in 10 countries, we investigate how the wages of men and women and therefore the gender wage gap varies when the fraction of women increase…

  • Low-Income Students in Higher Education

Open Access•Marjolein Muskens, Willem E Frankenhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Youth and Adolescence•2019•Citada por: 3•Referências: 36

It is undesirable when students attend institutions that are less selective than their academic credentials would permit (i.e., undermatching) because of the long-term consequences for their job opportunities and wages, in particular for students from low-socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds. Undermatching may also affect students' satisfaction during college. Research from a life course perspective shows that subjective experiences during college may…

  • Explaining Children’s Life Outcomes

Open Access•E de Neubourg, Lex Borghans et al.•ARTICLE•Child Indicators Research•2017•Citada por: 1•Referências: 9

The goal of the present paper is to introduce a dynamic life cycle model that explains the reproduction of wealth and health over generations by introducing knowledge from cognitive neuroscience into the existing knowledge from the socioeconomic literature. The socioeconomic literature successfully identified the major role of socioeconomic status of parents, both as a direct and indirect effect, in the shaping and intergenerational reproduction …

  • What grades and achievement tests measure

    Open Access•Lex Borghans, Bart H H Golsteyn et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2016

Significance Grades and scores on achievement tests are widely used as measures of cognition. This paper examines these measures and their constituent parts. We establish that, on average, grades and achievement tests are generally better predictors of life outcomes than “pure” measures of intelligence. The reason is that they capture aspects of personality that have been shown to be predictive in their own right. All of the standard measures of …

  • The Healthy Primary School of the Future

Open Access•Maartje Willeboordse, Maria Jansen et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

  • Fostering and Measuring Skills

Tim Kautz, James J Heckman et al.•REPORT•OECD education working papers•2014•Citada por: 33•Referências: 11

IQ tests and achievement tests do not capture non-cognitive skills - personality traits, goals, character and motivations that are valued in the labour market, in school and elsewhere. For many outcomes, their predictive power rivals or exceeds that of cognitive skills. Skills are stable across situations with different incentives. Skills are not immutable over the life cycle. While they have a genetic basis they are also shaped by environments, …

  • Fostering and Measuring Skills

Tim Kautz, James J Heckman et al.•REPORT•National Bureau of Economic…•2014•Citada por: 68•Referências: 10

This paper reviews the recent literature on measuring and boosting cognitive and noncognitive skills. The literature establishes that achievement tests do not adequately capture character skills|personality traits, goals, motivations, and preferences that are valued in the labor market, in school, and in many other domains.Their predictive power rivals that of cognitive skills.Reliable measures of character have been developed. All measures of char…

  • People Skills and the Labor-Market Outcomes of Underrepresented Groups

Open Access•Lex Borghans, Bas Ter Weel et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2014•Citada por: 12•Referências: 71

In this article, the authors show that people skills are important determinants of labor-market outcomes, including occupational choice and wages. Technological and organizational changes have increased the importance of people skills in the workplace. The authors particularly focus on how the increased importance of these skills has affected the labor-market outcomes of underrepresented groups, assuming that gender differences in interactions an…

  • Gender Differences in Risk Aversion and Ambiguity Aversion

Open Access•Lex Borghans, Bart H H Golsteyn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the European Economic…•2009

This paper demonstrates gender differences in risk aversion and ambiguity aversion. It also contributes to a growing literature relating economic preference parameters to psychological measures by asking whether variations in preference parameters among persons, and in particular across genders, can be accounted for by differences in personality traits and traits of cognition. Women are more risk-averse than men. Over an initial range, women requ…

  • The Economics and Psychology of Personality Traits

Lex Borghans, Angela L Duckworth et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Human Resources•2008

This paper explores the interface between personality psychology and economics. We examine the predictive power of personality, and the stability of personality traits over the life cycle. We develop simple analytical frameworks for interpreting the evidence in personality psychology and suggest promising avenues for future research.

  • The Division of Labour, Worker Organisation, and Technological Change

    Open Access•Lex Borghans, Bas Ter Weel•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2006•Citada por: 4•Referências: 27

The model developed in this article explains differences in the division of labour across firms as a result of computer technology adoption. Changes in the division of labour result from reduced production time and improved communication possibilities. The first shifts the division of labour towards generic structures, while the latter enhances specialisation. Our estimates for a sample of Dutch establishments in the period 1990-6 suggest that pr…
