The empirical setting and context for this contribution is the Hare Indian land in the Northwest Territories in Canada. The author opposes a purely taxonomic approach to ethnobiology. The article is about the relationship between women, men and dogs. The ethnographic location is Yamdena in Tanimbar, East Indonesia. Here live the Matinen people in Makatian village. Matinen are swidden agriculturalists, but the men may achieve social recognition and prestige as buffalo and wild pig hunters. In the hunt, locally bred dogs play an important part. The status of berdache among North American Indians was filled by persons, usually male, who remained members of their biological gender but assumed important social characteristics of the other gender.
