Physicians and nurses are often portrayed as differing in their attitudes about death. Evidence is presented that professional role rather than gender may account for the observed differences. It is suggested that the defensive styles typically utilized by nurses and physicians contribute to the attitudinal differential, and that this, in turn, perhaps underlies the tension sometimes seen around the care of terminal patients
