Operating in recurrent crises
Background: During crises, decision-makers often operate under uncertainty, relying on limited evidence and intuition, increasing the risk of unintended consequences. In Israel, hospitals have recently faced back-to-back crises: the COVID pandemic and the war following October 7th 2023. Objective: This study aimed to explore hospitals' decision-making processes during crises and how managing one crisis influenced responses to subsequent crises. M…
Ignorance is not bliss
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer worldwide. Despite inclusion in Israel’s national immunization program, HPV vaccine uptake among young adults remains suboptimal. Understanding how information sources influence HPV vaccination knowledge, attitudes, and intentions may aid the design of effective public health interventions. This cross-sectional study (December 2023-February 2024) surveyed unvaccinated Israeli adul…

Impact of HPV educational intervention on knowledge and vaccination intentions among Ukrainian migrant and refugee parents in Poland
Background Despite the availability of HPV vaccines, uptake remains low among Ukrainian adolescents. Educational interventions can enhance parents’ knowledge and intent regarding HPV vaccination. Objective To evaluate the effects of a prospective, culturally tailored, evidence-based HPV vaccine face-to-face educational intervention on knowledge and vaccine intent among Ukrainian migrant and refugee (UMR) parents in Poland, utilizing a pre-post de…
Differences in timeliness, completeness and drop-out rates of MMRV and DTP containing vaccines among Ultra-Orthodox Jews and others in a deprived Northern Israel city
Vaccine coverage was lower in UO neighborhoods, even in a peripheral city where coverage in non-UO areas is already low. Coverage differences between UO and non-UO populations decreased with time for MMRV1 but not DTP. Our findings suggest timeliness should be considered alongside non-vaccination, and vaccination behavior may be vaccine-specific in the UO population
Heterogeneity in vaccination attitudes and behavior within an outwardly homogenous religious group
Significant intra-UO variation in vaccination attitudes and behavior challenges the assumption of community uniformity. Local health services should identify and consider the particulars of their population to deliver equitable and effective vaccine programmes
Changes in long-term employment and income following Covid-19 (Sars-CoV-2) infection among Jewish and Arab populations in Israel
After adjusting for potential socio-economic confounders, SARS-CoV-2 Infection was a significant determinant of employment changes and income loss among Arabs, but not Jews, in Israel. This finding suggests the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing inequalities and highlights the need for economic recovery policies specifically targeting vulnerable groups
“Why would we?” A qualitative study on Covid-19 vaccination decision making among Ukrainian economic female migrants in Poland
Background: Ukraine has one of the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates in Europe. This may pose a significant epidemiological risk in the context of the refugee crisis and the fact that, since 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has been spreading and changing globally. Objective: To evaluate determinants of vaccination decision making among Ukrainian female migrants (UFMs). Methods: A qualitative study with 45 UFMs was conducted between December 2021 and January 202…
Long Covid
INTRODUCTION: A proportion of people develop Long Covid after acute COVID-19, but with most studies concentrated in high-income countries (HICs), the global burden is largely unknown. Our study aims to characterise long-term COVID-19 sequelae in populations globally and compare the prevalence of reported symptoms in HICs and low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: A prospective, observational study in 17 countries in Africa, Asia…
Barriers to HPV vaccination in marginalized Roma communities in Slovakia
Introduction: Limited access to healthcare services leads to lower vaccination rates in marginalized Roma communities (MRCs). This study aimed to explore health system barriers to HPV vaccination faced by people from MRCs from multiple perspectives. Methods: The qualitative study was conducted in Slovakia in 2021/22 with 43 community members and health professionals. Data were analyzed using a combination of content analysis and consensual qualit…

Health System Barriers to Child Mandatory and Optional Vaccination among Ukrainian Migrants in Poland in the Context of MMR and HPV Vaccines—A Qualitative Study
Background Migrants' access to healthcare services is limited. This study aimed to identify health system barriers to vaccination, specifically HPV/MMR vaccination among children in Ukrainian economic migrants (UMs). Methods Between December 2021-March 2022, a qualitative study of UMs living in Poland was conducted. Six focus groups were held with 53 UMs aged 15-45; in-depth interviews with 12 healthcare workers (HCWs) were also performed. A them…
Sars-CoV-2 infection in London, England
Background The UK has been one of the European countries most affected by COVID-19 pandemic. The UK implemented a lockdown in March 2020, when testing policy at the time was focusing on hospitalised cases. Limited information is therefore available on the impact of the lockdown on point prevalence in the community. We assessed COVID-19 point prevalence in London between early April and early May 2020, which approximately reflect infection around …

Awareness of health effects of cooking smoke among women in the Gondar Region of Ethiopia
BACKGROUND: The burning of biomass fuels results in exposure to high levels of indoor air pollution, with consequent health effects. Possible interventions to reduce the exposure include changing cooking practices and introduction of smoke-free stoves supported by health education. Social, cultural and financial constraints are major challenges to implementation and success of interventions. The objective of this study is to determine awareness o…
Laying the Foundations for the Regeneration of the Empire
The first votes cast in the French Revolution were those in the municipal elections of 1790, but they have not received the attention they deserve. In fact they laid the foundations for the new revolutionary edifice and, by examining them, this article builds on Lynn Hunt's pioneering work on the impact of the Revolution on urban politics. It tests her arguments about the sociology of the emergent urban elites. Did merchants predominate, while ar…

Citizen participation and emprowerment
Local environmental hazards place millions of citizens at risk of physical, emotional, and financial harm. While the discovery of such hazards can be fundamentally disempowering for individuals and communities, few scholars have examined the dynamics of empowerment in this context. We explore the relationships among forms of empowerment, citizen participation, and local environmental hazards, and offer a model of the processes of empowerment and …

Realized rates of return on U.K. Home and overseas portfolio investment in the age of high imperialism
The Determinants of U.K. Investment Abroad, 1870–1913
Perhaps because the world had never before or since seen such a large proportion of national income devoted to accumulating overseas assets, the processes of British accumulation in the period from 1870 to 1913 have long been given disproportionate attention in the study of modern British economic history. Calculations based on C. H. Feinstein's latest studies of U.K. income, expenditures and product suggest that roughly half of the nation's annu…
